I know this place since many years, but never had the chance to get into the convento. What I suggest to everybody is to buy their home made cookies, they are really fantastic. My favorites are pastas-almendras. I'll come back sure.

Was wonderful to have the chance to see inside this majestic building and wish to thank my local guide Manuel for the chance to see the beautiful interior not usually open to the public.

Too bad I couldn't visit. December hours close very early. It looked really good, but the holidays could extend the schedule.

Sometimes I am selfish and I tell myself that I should not tell anyone about the puff pastries of the Convent of Santa Clara de Llerena. That I must keep that secret to myself and that there are four of us who enjoy them, but... later I regret it, because I am a Christian and Catholic by baptism and upbringing, and my conscience, which is the most inflexible companion I have, forces me to share the I was lucky that a couple of years ago I tried the sweet that I consider the finest and richest in the world.
The puff pastry that the sisters of Santa Clara de Llerena make, despite its name, is nothing like puff pastry, which they put on the same level as an old espadrille, as mentioned before.
A sweet that looks like a rope that is rolled up, like ensaimadas, composed of vertical and very thin sheets of a simple dough, made of flour, lard, I suppose it will be Iberian, since we are in the black-legged pig area, and sugar.
I can't even imagine how much work it must take to make them.
Tomorrow, if nothing prevents it, I will pick up 3 small ones, about the size of a flat plate, that I have ordered and it is possible that I will already be eating one, in pinches, on the way, in the car, since I usually leave it on the couch of the co-pilot and the temptation is great.
I guess it's not a sweet treat to be on a weight loss diet, but... if life is a gift and you only live once... do me the favor of not missing it, even if you then have to spend a week on endives. It will be worth it to them.
I think they make them on Thursdays and don't cook them in the summer, because of the heat.
I usually take the large ones (there are 3 sizes), which are huge and cost a lot: €22, but this time they were only small.
If you have the opportunity, pick them large, although the period for endives will have to be extended to two weeks.
I have the habit of giving them away when I really want to look good.
One of my two daughters, 16 years old, not long ago, told me: I would feed myself only on Santa Clara puff pastries; and I thought: You and anyone, but...
For the rest, Llerena is one of the towns in lower Extremadura that cannot be missed, as it has an almost unknown heritage that is enormous. He was unlucky enough that, when the civil war had just begun, all the agents of the Civil Guard of the region gathered there, so the religious heritage, which is more than abundant and top of the line, did not suffer the militia ravages that They destroyed, for example, the main altarpiece of the Church of the Consolation of Azuaga, a neighboring town and a must-see, a unique example, due to its very high quality, of neoclassical altarpieceism, which was rarely spread in southern Spain. The one that replaces it today must be from the 60s of the 20th century and, although it is a good example, it does not, according to experts say, come close to the category of rarity of the original.
