There are two ways to reach Giechburg Castle, the difficult one is park at the foot op the hill at the large parking lot and walk uphill or more easy, if the barrier is open, drive up by car to the cosy parking lot next to the castle. There is a third way, drive right through the gate to the courtyard, but then you have to be a bride and groom arriving for a photoshoot, what was indeed the case when we visited the castle (using method 2 by the way). The castle offers a nice walk round and an impressive view of the countryside, but except for the restaurant there isn't much more to do. A quick visit when in the neighbourhood is my advice.

It is a nice castle with an amazing view to visit. You can see all the small villages around. You can either go on foot or by car. Hiking routes are also nice. It can be hard to go up during winter season because of muddy route in forest but it is still nice. There is also a restaursnt at the top.

We did start from Schesslitz, which is about an hour to walk to the Giechburg ruins. It's a nice walk through woods and across open fields.
You'll pass a parking spot after 40 min. In case you are not in the best shape or have small kids hiking with you... Probably a good choice to start your hike from here.
Last 10 minutes are fairy steep and you'll see a lot of people struggling with the last few meters being out of breath. However, it's a nice path and not inconvenient at all.
At the ruins you have a great view and can relax in the beer garden they have in the yard.
Views on a clear day are spectacular across the Fraenkische Schweiz.

this is not a 'Schloss', but a castle ruin with restaurant and guestrooms.
Its right on top of a hill with views across Frankonia and Bamberg. Guests can either drive or walk up, if you stay in the hotel, you can park your car in the court yard.
We choose to stay at the hotel, which is located at a separate wing away from the restaurant. The rooms are double and no extra bed can be added, but the beds were wide enough to rough it out with two 8 y.o.and 2 adults. Ideal for couples. The furniture was new, but there was no TV or even a radio or a fridge or kettle in the room. The bath cabins are very small and severely outdated. There was no shampoo or soap supplied. Despite being summer, the bed had feather down doonas - simply too warm for the season, although the might come in handy in winter.
The restaurant closed for the day as we arrived, so we bought a picnic at the local supermarket and enjoyed our own company in the courtyard, which is partly furnished with beer garden style tables and benches. We had the castle all to ourselves! The kids had lots of opportunities to explore and run and we saw owls and other shy creatures as night fell. We enjoyed the sunset with a glass of wine from our high seat in the country. A truly magical summer experience!
Breakfast was an extra cost, but plentiful and varied. Given the low cost of accommodation, its ok for one night, I would rate the hotel just average due to basic rooms and very outdated bath rooms. Location is unbeatable, this place has so much potential for any entrepreneurial individual.

The Giechburg is situated approximately 20km from the City of Bamberg, towards Schesslitz. The old fortress was mentioned the first time around the 10th Century, for the main parts still around today the construction has started in the 16th Century. In 1971 the fortress was bought by Bamberg, a big renovation program was started and the fortress reopened for the public 1974. Nowadays it offers also a (small, 5 room) hotel, a franconian guesthouse and varying cultural events throughout the year. We've just visited the 'Medieval days' which was well worth a visit. The tourist information in Bamberg city will know details about ongoing events, currently there's an art exhibition in the tower of the fortress. Entrance to the fortress is free of charge, exhibitions may or may not charge some €, check for details with the tourist info Bamberg. There are two websites, one covering the old fortress: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giechburg and for the restaurant: http://giechburg-gaststaette.de/ausflugsziele.shtml Both websites are in German language. You can find some information in English on the tourist info website of the City of Bamberg here: http://www.bamberg.info/en/poi/giechburg_castle-6905/ A short walk from the Giechburg is the 'Gügel' Chapel. As both the Giechburg and the way to the chapel are either rough cobblestones or natural ground good walkingshoes are recommended, from the parking area to the fortress it's an approximately 15min, quite steep, uphill walk. The Giechburg cannot be recommended for either wheelchair users and baby buggies! If you want to look for the fortress in Google Earth, it's the 'Giechburg, 96110 Schesslitz, Germany'

Just a few more minutes from Schesslitz, Giechburg ruin sits high on a hill. A little out of the way from Bamberg, but it's worth the drive to see this one. The view from this castle on a clear day is amazing. You have a choice to either drive your car all the way to the top of the hill, or park it down below and climb the paved road about 500 m. If you are not a fit person, I don't recommend it. If you like to visit another site nearby, Gugelkirche, is about 20 mins hike away thru woods and meadows. There also is a German restaurant. It looked like they were getting ready for a wedding reception outdoors when we visited recently. I believe you have an option of staying at this castle as a hotel guest as well.

I have been there several times and we have always been served courteously and very friendly. Reservations are no problem. The price-performance ratio is good. Very child-friendly. The view of the surrounding area is beautiful. There is also a short, easy hike to Gügel, just 1 km away (a pilgrimage church worth seeing with a picnic area and a small playground).
