This museum is open despite Tripadvisor saying it is temporarily closed. We had trouble finding it because I underestimated how far out of the town of Gibellina Nuova it is - half a mile down a country lane off a road to the east of the town - but it is worth it. I agree with JABSuffolk's review from nearly 18 months ago: the contents of three galleries in two buildings on the site are an unexpected (pleasant) surprise. There are decorated doors, costumes, paintings and various items from different cultures that have controlled Sicily at different times, including Arabic. If you like history and culture, it's only 10 minutes or so off the A29 autostrada (motorway) if you get your directions right!

An unexpected surprise

This is a little known museum, with spectacualr displays and unusual themes. The juxtapositioning of unrelated objectsmakes it particularly interesting. Well worth a detour

Gibellina's Wunderkammer

As an imaginary city, Gibellina, both old and new, is unbeatable. Spend a couple of days in this surrealist dream and it will change you. One may argue that it is a spectacular failure, but spectacular it is and that's what matters for the pilgrim/visitor. The exquisite "Museo delle Trame Mediterranee", where you will almost certainly be the only visitor, is the jewel of Gibellina's crown. A place of delicate, luminous beauty.

While visiting Gibellina one can not leave without a visit to the museum (museo delle Trame del mediterraneo) The huge outdoor installation  by Mimmo Paladino, La montagna di sale, (Mountain of salt) really gives you a sense of what kind of tragedy was caused by the earthquake, not only for humans but also for the animals who lived on the land. The salt was brought over from the salt mines of Trapani. 

Here at the museum you can see some very interesting modern Art, one section of the museum show you the link of the artefacts from the historical past and the modern day Gibbellina, clothing,pottery, weapon, tiles and more. The other section has many interesting installations. The sense I got here was that these kind of works would be found in the Tate modern or the MOMA, a very nice surprise to find such treasure in a this modest little museum.
