While driving about in eight lesser-traveled provinces this spring, we encountered a host of archo sites that felt more like empty cathedrals. Nestled comfortably and rock hewn within natural bluffs, Sutri's Anfteatro has an unusual elliptical shape, allegedly more conducive to better and more intimate seating.
Situated so proximately to Rome (within a half-hour or so), along with multiple other comparable archeo gems and a lovely cathedral, Sutri has well earned its official status as a national "Orange" treasure town. We visited many and were never disappointed for a moment in any given one.

After paying the price to enter the archaeological area, we visited the most amazing Roman amphitheater i had ever seen after the one in Rome. This one was however completely different and wholly built inside the rock giving it a really impressive and spectacular aspect.

Cute and interesting amphitheater because it is carved down, into the rock, rather than built up. It costs money to go in but if you walk around the park that it is in, you can see all the cool caves and gardens in the villas on top. The view from the gardens on top show the amphittheater better and it is free.

Out of the cliffs they have chopped out a grand amfitheater some 2000 years ago , also som graves from early Christians times. Just by the road, parking outside. After your visit hear do not miss to go up the hit to old town Sutri, passing the co-cathedral with a crypt, and on the top of the street ,On the very pitoresque main square ,a nice outdoor cafe with ice cream and refreshments

It costs 5E each to visit unless the first Sunday each month when it is free. This is well worth it and also includes entrance into the carved out Chapel with amazing fresco's. Make sure you go up behind the Chapel into the garden of the villa and wind around so you have a view of the amphitheater from above (all of that is free). Recommend you also cross the highway and enter Sutri from below through the old gate and go to the plaza at the top. Then walk down the street and go inside the Cathedral which is amazing.

The Roman amphitheater is probably the most visited sight in Sutri and one of the oldest. The large theater is made from a tuff rock and it is believed that it dates back to the 1st century BC, although it cannot be said for sure. Due to its layout and design, it is believed that the theater must have been used for standing and watching the processions rather than sitting. The amphitheater is now rarely used for public events and is mostly only for the tourists to explore.
