Tucked away against the city walls you will discover this beautiful church with remarkable 1000 year old mosaics. You will see evidence of Etruscan tombs used as building materials. The lovely guardian who is there will take you on a guided tour and open the back door which leads out onto terraces which overlook the city walls. And nobody there - if this were Tuscany it would be packed.

Worth the walk to the end of the town to discover this old church in a prominent position with good views of the valley. Lovely cosmatesque floors and simple 12th century interior. a very friendly guide made me welcome.

The church Santa Maria di Castello is located near the Castle gates next to the Castle Tower. It was some kind of renovations going on at the time of our visit so we did not venture inside the church. The building dates to late 11th - early 12th century.

Beautiful old church, with very minimal decoration but that is what makes it so beautiful and awe-inspiring. It's free, and you are done within 10 minutes, but those 10 minutes couldn't be better spend. Take a good look at the decoration (= colored stones) in the roof and ancient "baptizing tub" and, if possible, leave through the door in the back to enjoy a wonderful view over the sea and on the opposite side the outside wall of Tarquinia.

As I said before, it's free, but they very much appreciate it if you leave a note/signature in their guestbook! Small effort :).

It is worth going out of your way and making time to see Chiesa di Santa Maria in Castello, built 1121-1208, it was a cathedral until 1435, then abandoned and restored many times, it is now deconsecrated. There is a lovely cosmatesque floor, with some portions damaged by earthquake. The lovely marble octagonal baptismal font, is allegedly made from an ancient tomb. The church is beautiful in its simplicity, however, the facades central portal have remnants of cosmatesque decorations framing it and the mullioned window above the portal give a glimpse of past glory. There are fantastic views over the Valley of the River Marta from the side door.

The volunteer here was brilliant, he spent 20 minutes pointing out things we would have otherwise missed -
A piece of marble reused in the construction of the church with Etruscan writing etched in.
Markings on the floor, denoting the symbols of the stonemasons.
Graffiti of a French cavalry officer from the 19th century. The church was used as a stable by French troops in the 19th century, this probably added to the damage of the floor.

This church, despite age still stands graceful and majestic in appearance, something which many elaborate churches lack. This is a lovely church which would not be open but for the wonderful volunteers, who share the history of the church with great passion to those who enter. This little gem is worth going out of your way for, not as flashy as a lot of other churches but it still manages to outshine some of them, with big hearted volunteers keen to explain the history within. The church was used for the TV series “The Borgias”.

We drove past this 13th century church and the ancient tower very close to it, in the evening, unfortunately it was closed. However, even from the outside it is striking. The tower is about 50 metres high making it the highest in the town of Tarquinia.
History notes that these towers were constructed by anti-clerical orders in competition to churches and their bell towers. The road leading to the church, passing through one of the town gates, is cobblestoned.

Very ancient church - special in that it wasn't the typical ornately decorated church. A simple, very old treasure. Great view of valley from a side door.
