I tried to research this route and found it difficult to plan for this visit. Bus #118 or a taxi would get us here. When we arrived we stumbled upon a great tourist info building (and bike rental). The lady was extremely helpful! She gave us a GREAT map and marked it with places to see, hours that places were open as well as the cost to get in. The places to see were pretty spaced out and entrances were not always obvious. Luckily we had planned to spend several hours walking, and we needed all that time. This is not something you can rush to see everything.

We did not rent any bikes we juat walked up and down Via Appia, admired the ruins and took in the spirit of the place. It's quiet, a blessing to go there after crowded and noisy Rome. You also get to see some very fancy villas.

We visited via Appia Antica on my birthday, my choice of activity for the day. I was not disappointed! It was a pleasant walk through the countryside, and the historical value of the original road sections - as well as the old buildings, landmarks, and monuments we pass - only increased the thrill of the visit. On a sunny late spring day in the late afternoon, the lighting was perfect for picture-taking.

This was a short scooter ride from the Colosseum, and well worth the trip.

We hired two bicycles with kids seats and had a great day at Appia Antica. We cycled through the Parco Regionale dell'Appia Antica until Cecilia Metella.

All the online reviews I read described this as a walk in the park, free of traffic on a Sunday. After a rip off 17.50 Euro taxi ride from central Rome, we spent 2.5 miles dodging cars, manic cyclists, joggers, power walkers and horse riders on a single track road with few pedestrian paths due to the narrow, often wall enclosed boundary. This is not recommended for the faint hearted, those with young children or those with limited mobility. Another tip for those on foot is that the road is all up hill from Rome - consistently. Stout shoes are recommended. It took 2.5miles from the park entrance to reach an actual bit of Roman Road which lasted for about 500 mtrs before reverting to more recent cobbles. There were a few buildings of historic interest, but not as many as I anticipated. We waited 40 mins for a bus for our return to Rome, only 1.5 Euros. Overall, a long journey for a 'walk in the park'.

This is a great historical site however be warned, from the direction of Rome it is all up hill so pretty hard work. Also on a Sunday it is not closed to traffic as per some of the literature. In fact you are dodging cars, horses and cyclists all going as fast as they can. So whilst it is a nice walk with some decent sites it is also extremely busy and most definitely not a peaceful walk in the countryside.

After the roads were closed down for a cycle tour, we finally took a taxi to get to the Parco della Caffarella in which this ancient road lies. What a wonderful place to go after the crowded masses of Rome. We hired a bicycle (@ €3 p.h.) at the information point of the parc. The map we got was simple but informative.
The 'antica' parts of the road were a bit of a challenge. As others before us, we took the side of the road which was really an 'off road' track. So my 80 year old aunt and mom went back after 3 or so KM.
The road leads to the rural parts of Rome. Delightful!!
Just what we needed after 3 days of touristic Rome.
The road is supposed to be car-free on Sundays, but two events were taking place so no chance of a quiet first 3 km.

(There are bicycle helmets available at the bike rental point.)

A lovely walk along an ancient route out of the eternal city, enjoy a coffee first and last at the little garden just by the big round monument then two or three miles of stroll along ancient stones passing modern gates keeping us away from the new rich romans and on into a distance made endless by the sheer straightness of the route - clever engineers. The bus journey from Colosseo on 118 is simply terrifying of course, goodness knows what speed down narrow via, certainly not a single horse powered journey - but well worth the white knuckles.

Take the 118 or 660 bus to the San Sebastian catacombs. Hire a bike or walk away from Rome and the quiet interesting section of the road not towards Rome on the busy, scary bit! Take water with you but you can refill at lots of places along the way. It's interesting & very peaceful after a few days in Rome. Use the café at San Sebastian for cheap & cheerful food & drink. Avoid the pretentious Ristorante L'Archeologia on the junction at all costs. They want the posh people with money from the villas dotted about. Not hot sweaty tourists looking for a cool drink in the shade. We ordered drinks but were then asked to leave because we weren't having a meal. Then they charged 14 euros for 4 soft drinks. We paid with a 20 & never got any change. Italy at it's rip off best. But not thankfully representative of the majority for eateries around.

We had a brilliant few hours riding bikes on the Via Appia Antica.
However, we found it very difficult to research the best way to plan how to get there, and what to do on our visit, despite extensive "Googling".
I wasn't happy about taking the bus because of the likely time it would take, so took a taxi.
Despite showing the taxi driver the exact address of the Visitor centre which is near to the start of the Via Appia Antica - he drove past by a long way, driving to the Catacombs.
Thanks to Google maps I realised what had happened but had a bit of a debate with him (I speak basic Italian) and he took us back.
The Visitor centre isn't very clearly signposted (look out for the flags on the side of the building).
The hired bikes were 3 Euro per hour.
The first (busy with traffic) part of the Via can be avoided by taking a parallel small road to the Catacombs (the very helpful visitor centre staff have us excellent tips and advice).
We cycled for about an hour (really interesting things to see, and hardly any traffic even on a Saturday) then came back, stopping for lunch at a small restaurant by the side of the Via.
The Visitor centre then ordered a taxi back to Rome centre (approx 15 Euro).
