Before it was a castle built in 1458 after Francis I D’Este modified the castle into a Ducal Palace in 1609.
I absolutely recommend to visit Fish Farm/ Peschiera Delizia Ducale.

What an unexpected treasure in such an industrial area. The restoration of this castle that was converted to a residence for a duke in 1634, is still a work in progress but meticulously done. The guided tour was well worth the money to hear the stories behind the paintings, rooms and the gardens, the private fishing pond & the fountains.

Sassuolo (which is not far from Modena) is not a place that many visit as the town is not very interesting and industrial, except for the Palazzo Ducale, which is well worth the visit. As is the case with many of the grand eighteenth century palaces of northern Italy, Sassuolo has been occupied by the military until quite recently, but it is now managed by the Galleria d’Este in Modena. It is unfurnished but has fabulous frescoes, particularly the long gallery by Boulanger, which is in part inspired by the Carracci’s Galleria Farnese in Rome. Boulanger is not a household name but he is a fabulous painter who worked extensively at Sassuolo, and his gallery really is a masterpiece. Although there are not a lot of visitors, it is open when it says it is and the staff are helpful and not rigid in their systems and take visitors around when they turn up. The palace, incidentally, is very grand, with a spectacular staircase, and from the terrace you can see an extraordinary, but mostly ruined, large ornamental fish tank which once had water tricks, obelisks and so forth. There are indications that they are going to restore this, which is a great idea as there are not many such features surviving.

Only opened to the public in the late 1990s this palace has been used by government since it was built by the Duke. It airs on the feel of the great Versailles. There are works of art on the walls & ceilings that are masterfully painted. The size and the grounds make this place stand out in such a small town. As this palace continues to be refurbished, its popularity will continue to grow. As in typical Italian building history, the Duke knocked down part of the old town that is now the large square entrance to the palace. All of the attendants inside are very knowledgeable about the inside works of art. Note: entry fee required, only steps to enter the upstairs and be careful not to touch anything even the outside walls of the palace.

The Duke d'Este Palace in SASSUOLO called 'The Deliziosa' is a great surprise when you travel across Emilia Romagna. In a small town where they have a strong soccer team in A, you'll find this amazing XVI century Palace built by the Duke d'Este, has galleries and rooms full of frescos with metaphoric meanings about human beings, there are rooms dedicates to faithfulness, to love, and to luck. It is extremely interesting the room dedicated to love and to his risks with paintings representing Salomon, Cleopatra, Hercules and Orlando.
The huge army hall is simply fantastic and there is also a more modern part with Charles X white and gold doors that hosts beautiful art collections.
Incredible also the huge fountain outside.
Absolutely a must see!

The entrance to the palace is imposing with its larger-than-life statues of Neptune and some other ancient gods and goddesses. The exhibitions inside are free to visit once a month (first Sunday maybe). It is full of pictures dating from the 16th century on. In fact, there are more pictures than someone who is not a great art-fan can digest. there is a great view on the neighbouring hills from the balcony and there is a huge park which used to belong to the palace. To see that this big area used to belong to one single family is... imposing but also thought-provocig.
