Wonderful views.

Drove up to the pass from the south, Laroles. Plenty of hairpins. Low key space at the top with shut up buildings in September and display boards. This is the only road across the Sierra Nevada, at 2000 metres, about 6500 feet. Various hiking trails are signposted and there are picnic tables. We decided to follow one to Aldeire for a way to see if there was a view. We followed red and white markers and kept to the valley floor, heading for the watershed with the forest on our right. On reaching the top after 30 pretty easy minutes we were rewarded with a spectacular view across plains and distant mountains to the north and the mountain range to west culminating in Mulhacen, 3483 metres, the highest in Spain? We returned the same way and in the hour away we met nobody apart from a herd of semi-wild horses.

Walks from 2000 metres
Sep 2017 • Pasangan
We have done some very pleasant and easy short walks and saw semi-wild horses and cows.

We also walked 600 metres up to one of the highest peaks with great views.

There are no services in this mountain pass, so it could be a good idea to take food and snacks to spend some time there. There is an ice cold water fountain and many cars stop there just to fill water bottles.

The road going up to Puerto de la Ragua is quite narrow at times, so it could be a bit challenging to not confident drivers. In winter is could be icy and it is better to check with the guardia civil before going because it could be closed due to snow.

We drove 88 Kilometres from Roquettes only to find a deserted area with no amenities and no toilets!!!!

It was a great drive with great views but no end result!

A pleasant stop on the beautiful road over the Sierra Nevada
Agt 2013 • Pasangan
Puerto de La Ragua sits at the highest point on the road crossing the Sierra Nevada mountains from Almeria to Granada. In the summer the cooler temperature offers a respite from the relentless heat of lower altitudes. There is a wooded area that is great for picnics. Also available is food & drink to purchase (as well as toilets). Great place to sit with a cool drink and enjoy the tranquillity of the mountain pass. The road up to the pass is very scenic from the south. As you start down towards Granada northwards you will come across the Mirador del Marquesado. Fantastic views over miles of countryside stretching in all directions - not to be missed.
