I do not want to give much away but it is an experience. No photos are allowed and having been there I totally understand.
Something that I have never experienced anywhere else in the world. This church is worth a visit, but make sure that there are locals praying when you go, with their chickens. I will say no more

I'm Mexican and This is the first time I visit Chiapas. Please be carefu when visiting this place. People is way too agreessive. I wouldn't take my family here. Children and women in the streets chasing you to sell you handcrafts. We bought some and then entered to a storen for more. We didn't buy any because the man wanted us to pay my stuff again. We tried to explain we had bought them from another person and then he threatened us with a knife. Another friend in a different part was going to buy a pair of earrings. She wanted to changed the earring backs cause they were damaged and the seller didn't want to. Then he started to shout, and insult cause my friend didn't want to buy them. He took a car and tried to run over us. People peeing on the street right there on our face. The church looks nice from the entrance but when you get there, it is dirtier than any other normal city in Mexico.

Before people were distant with tourists but respectful now they are quite dangerous and hostile to tourists, super bad experience threaten to hurt you if you do not give them money.

The square is very nice and there are lots and lots of little shops of the local people: fruit, food, souvenirs, clothes, ecc.

I visited this little indigenous town on a guided tour that I liked so much that I took the tour twice. The local "Catholic" church was minus a parish priest because the parishioners had murdered the last one, and all the statues of saints were kept in locked boxes to prevent them from being vandalized by the same parishioners!

The only church in this village is simply unique. Although it’s catholic, the population is still using their old rites and ceremonies, before the spanish colony.
The vibe is very different from any other Church I’ve been.
The chamulas are proud of their traditions and you can see that in this eclectic yet beautiful place.

If you appreciate the history and rituals of the indigenous people, this is a once in a lifetime experience. We had an excellent guide with a great ability to explain the ancient Mayan customs and traditions still practiced. I shall return.

A VERY interesting place. The only place worth the visit is the church.
And the only way to make the visit worthy is by hiring a guide.
I had never seen the mix between pagan & catholic rituals that I saw there (i.e. a chaman killing a chicken inside!)

No pictures or video allowed.

Visited the small village which is approximately 10 km north west of san cristobel de las casas and is home to a fiercely independent Tzotzil community. This is one of the largest indigenous groups in Chiapas and such an eye opener. These people have their own authorities and police force. We were allowed to take photos from a distance but not up close of the people. The highlight of the village was the SAN Juan Bautista church which is over 200 hundred years old. This church is painted turquoise and is one of the most intensely sacred spots of Mexico. A must must visit. The church floor is covered with pine needles and the lights of hundreds of candles gives an eerie light and feeling. I was there when a chicken was being sacrificed in one of the ceremonies and could not believe bottles of cocoa cola were involved in releasing evil spirits. No photos unfortunately were allowed in the church. One of the highlights of my trip.

If you happen to be in San Cristobal de las Casas, do pay a visit to this amazing village. The short trip feels like a time travel through the past centuries. The church, is of course, the highlight of the small village. If you have ever read any Caribbean novels you might feel like in the setting of one of those. All you senses get involved - you hear the chanting of the people, smell the pine and the frankincense, feel the burning candles, taste the bitter smoke coming from the same... A lovely place where traditions blends with Catholicism - i have travelled a lot, but never had I seen anything as unique as the church and the rituals.
Imagine the people sitting on the floor, candles burning everywhere most of them glued directly onto the floor, a carpet of pine needles and flower petals. A hypnotizing chant of preying people.. and the really creepy neck wringing of the chicken which made it feel like a real setting of a novel or a voodoo movie.
As already said so often, do not take any pictures if you do not want to have you camera or even worse - your head broken. The people are really serious about this.
