One of the most beautiful mosques I've ever visited!
Agt 2018
This mosque is located in Ketapang in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. It may not be easy to reach since one would have to fly all the way to Pontianak and then to Ketapang to get there, but the place is really beautiful. Ketapang is not really a tourist destination. For one thing, there are no public means of transportation. Second, people don't speak English, making communication quite difficult for tourists who don't speak Bahasa. Third, there's no organized local tourism. I was just fortunate enough to have been invited by some friends in Ketapang and thus given a chance to visit this place. The people there are quite simple and friendly (notwithstanding the language barrier). As to the grand mosque of Al-Ikhlas, it took them seven years to finish the structure (2011-2016). The internal designs were finished only in early 2017 and are considered as some of the most beautiful in Indonesia, combining both Malay and Arabic motifs. The whole place was intended to accommodate only 5,000 people at a time -- hence, it really gets crowded especially during Ramadan when even the outer courtyards get jam-packed. The place is open to the public, even to tourists (except during prayer time). Be sure to observe proper decorum when you visit this place. Remember that it is a place of worship and not so much a tourist destination. No footwear is allowed inside not so much to keep the whole structure, but as a sign of respect since the mosque and all its precincts are considered as holy ground ("batas suci", as they say in Bahasa).
