Do not stay in Kii-Tanabe! They don't like foreigners.
Des 2019
Overall the experience was fantastics. I travel to Japan quite often. Stayed in Kii-Tanabe in 2019 prior to Typhoon Hagibis. I found the people to be very rude. No restaurant would serve us as we were foreigners. DO NOT STAY in Kii-Tanabe.

Way to go to Nashi Shrine and waterfall
Jan 2020 • Keluarga
You can park your car at the parking of Kumano slope bus station and enjoy during your way up to Kumano shrine and waterfall amazing forest with 800 years trees. You feel very small in this so beautiful nature. Take time to look at these trees who has some roots around stone, to feel the link and relation between the trees... these 300 steps between trees are much much better that parking your car at the nashi site directly. It is pure pleasure !

Slightly overrated as a walk
Des 2019
We walked the Nakahechi route in early Winter as a secular hike over 6 days with a bit of help from local buses on two. As a pure walk it is slightly disappointing - extensive views are limited and much of the walking is through monocultural plantation forest (which is not explained in any of the reports or brochures I have seen) of Japanese cedars. Limited wildlife. Culturally it is superb: the Shinto and Buddhist sites are interesting at a range of scales and the accomodation we stayed at was welcoming and excellent ( but expensive). The terminal shrine(s) and surroundings at Nachi Taisha are truly outstanding. But tourists arrive the easy way by the busload so it is very crowded except late in the evening or first thing.

Kumano Kodo with Walk Japan
Nov 2019
My wife and I just completed a 6 day self-guided walking tour of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route with Walk Japan. Overall it was a mixed experience though at the end we felt a sense of achievement at having completed a relatively tough trek. Pros : 1. The route has an interesting history bound up with the Shinto and Buddhist faiths. 2. The autumn colours were beautiful 3. We got to see a more traditional and quieter side of Japan Cons : 1. Some of the accommodation was VERY basic i.e. no en-suite facilities of any kind, not even a sink in one of the inns 2. Walk Japan's routes and timing gave very little time to enjoy the scenery or explore the ancient shrines. Instead, we had to focus on reaching our objectives before nightfall 3. One of the routes had a 40 minute detour because of recent landslide damage to the path - Walk Japan mentioned this in their directions but didn't adjust the suggested route to make up for the extra time - they could have moved the starting point of the day's walk closer to the end point so that the walking time remained the same. I am happy to have completed one of the only two UNESCO World Heritage pilgrimages but I feel that Walk Japan's package has some notable flaws that detracted from the experience.

Great expertise from Kumano Travel
Nov 2019 • Teman
It might be hard to find detailed info about the Kumano trail online. But do not let that keep you from doing this amazing trek! Walking mostly in forests and through small Japanese villages on paths that have been walked for over 1000 years, this is a true gem of Japan and will get you straight to the heart of the country! We struggled a lot with finding good advice online, but everything was sorted out beautifully at Kumano Travel. Options for storing or forwarding luggage, great expertise on how to walk and what to do and lots of tips for the hike. We felt so grateful for their help, it made our trek into a success!

Kumano Koda Using OkuJapan
Okt 2019
I used OkuJapan and Jack Eves to set up the trip. One important note is we started the hike a few days after a massive typhoon hit Tokyo and eastern Japan and while we were hiking a second typhoon arrived. Nevertheless, it was a spectacular hike with amazing food and accommodations. I highly recommend OkuJapan for foreigners considering this trip. We chose a trip of eleven nights and ten days on both the Nakahechi and Kohechi trails, but shorter options are available. OkuJapan rates the hikes as “Challenging”, their most difficult rating. I concur with this not because the trails are technical but when they say it will take 6 hours to complete, it will take at least that. Furthermore we hiked in October and the sun set between 5:00 and 5:30 so we had to complete the walk in the allotted time. One evening we had some issues and came in late using headlamps. Fortunately the Inn where we were staying was concerned, called OkuJapan who in turn contacted me on the trail. The owners of the Inn then drove out to meet us on the road saving us considerable time and distance in the dark. Another issue was the wet conditions we encountered following and during a typhoon. In certain areas the trail consists of cobble stones and they could be very slippery requiring much care and slow going.

Hongu loop
Okt 2019
We intended to walk the Hongu loop but unfortunately a section was closed due to typhoon damage from the week before. Instead we got the bus from Hongu up to Hosshinmon-oji and walked the 10km back to Hongu. This was a lovely stretch with some undulations but mostly a gentle downhill. Great views of the giant Torii gate in the way down. We then walked over from Hongu to Yunomine Onsen & back. That return trip was about 7km & it is a steep climb then a steep descent (mostly stairs). These sections of the Kumano Kodo trail are very pretty and it was an enjoyable day.

Spiritual Journey along the Kohechi Route
Apr 2019
The Kumano Kodo as a Pilgrimage route and as twin heritage sites with The Camino Santiago de Compostela is worth doing. The Kohechi Route or the Mountain Route from Koyasan is exciting, challenging and endearing.

An unusual hiking trail
Okt 2019 • Sendiri
Well known to the Japanese for centuries a set of trails very well kept with cobble stones in some places going from worship places to others. Magnificent local cedar trees. Very relaxing and relatively easy.
