Make sure you have sneakers because some parts are paved but others are not. Depending on time of day you visit, make sure you have water and don’t forget sunscreen and a hat

Katsuren Castle Ruins are one of the UNESCO listed sites around Okinawa. The castle is free to visitors and there is a nice free parking lot across the street. The castle is perched on top of a hill overlooking the ocean, so you do have to walk uphill a bit. Trust me, the views are worth it. The castle is fairly large and there are a lot of signs/markers along the way explaining the history of the castle and certain features. The signs are in both Japanese and English. The stone work here is pretty fascinating, the walls are pretty well preserved. I would say an hour here is enough time to see everything, but it is well worth visiting!

Like most things in Okinawa it really pays to have a hire car to visit. It is possible via public transport but it will take you some time to get there from Naha. Its a beautiful castle ruins with the stunning stonework that is typical of the old Ryuku kingdom. Also the location is stunning and vistas from the top are great. take your camera :-)

The castle is most famous as the seat of Lord Amawari during the 15th century. According to legend, Amawari was a sickly child that got abandoned in the mountains to die. However, the child survived and grew into a powerful leader who defeated an oppressive lord and took over Katsuren Castle. Amawari's later attempt to attack Shuri Castle ended in failure and his death.
There are some steep steps leading up to the castle ruins which will not be suitable for the mobility impaired.

We had visited many other castle ruins before this, but this UNESCO World Heritage site is our favourite.
There is a free car park and tourist information centre opposite the castle ruins. Information sign posts are available along the route up the hill to offer more insights into the history of the site.
Climbing all the way up, you will be treated to stunning views of the ocean and surrounding regions.

Interesting tidbits along the climb about the history of the castle are written in Japanese and English and the app worked great as well although most of the info is the same as what you find on the plaques. The view from the top was worth the climb and watching the sunset from the site of the sacred shrine was perfect.

Easy climb to the top with greenery all along the way. Good view of the ocean with many photo spots. Can imagine the grandeur of the castle in its heyday.
