If you've got a spare hour or two and like a bit of a challenge, then why not run Mt Yufu?! I took the bus from town to the base and ran from the carpark. The terrain is mostly runnable aside from when you get closer to the summit (if you're not adverse to hill running). I did find the signage a bit lacking nearer the bottom, but I started late so was running near dusk so may have missed some. Return it took me ~80 minutes. I spent about the same amount of time waiting for the bus back to town (in the pitch dark). Haha. Great experience and beautiful views. Fully recemmond it

We hiked up Mount Yufu- it was 2hr 45 mins up and 2 hours down out and back 9km route with elevation gain of 680m . Good work out for hikers but a very pleasant hike during summer time .

There is a car park where you can park the car next to the public toilets and washing points . The trail is well marked out so it is easy to find your way around . Pretty accessible and difficult to get lost. Can download the hiking trail map from the JNTO website as well.

I regret I didn't have time to climb the mountain. It's icon for people at Yufu city. I don't know there is good way to access the trail head. May be next time!

Went to Mt Yufu early in the morning, I walked from Yufuin train station to the top of the mountain. It took a little over three hours. The tracks are clearly marked, except for the part from near the Lawson store where you turn off, not so clearly visible. The scenery was splendid it gets very cold at the top. There are chains attached to the mountain near the top to help with climbing. There are two peaks, Higashi and Nishi, I did both. I took rice balls with me and a hot drink, you will need food and drink. Overall it took 8 hours to do both peaks and return back to town. There is a local bus that can take you to the base, but I didn't use it. The track at the back of the mountain is narrow and steep so take it steady, this leads to the other peak. It was a good day out if you are reasonably fit and want something to do in Yufuin. I didn't have a map of the area but could still find my way without getting lost. If you can't see the entry path from the Lawson store in town, go to Lawson and ask the staff, some staff have a little English ability. Be careful but enjoy it I did.

First hiking experience in Japan for our family and we wished we had catered more time for it.
We started at about 11.30am, and took us about 3 hrs to reach the saddle. As the sun was setting in another 2 hours time, we decided to skip the scale up the summit and turned back. Proved to be the right decision as we would be descending in the dark if we had continued on. We reached back at the entrance at 5pm. So in total it took us about 5.5hrs.

Overall, it is possible for children, our 2 boys (5 and 7) enjoyed the hike, though we had to rest every now and then and they were need to get down on their hands and butt as they ascend and descend. The terrain was full of loose rocks so proper footwear is highly recommended. I would also recommend gloves to keep hands warm and also to protect the hands when holding on to the rocks.

Definitely a must do for those who enjoy hiking! The view is awesome!

On the spur of the moment we decided to climb Mt Yufu. Dressed in running gear and a baseball cap we parked up at the Mt Yufu mistrial car park on the main road between Beppu and Yufu.
It took us 2hrs 40mins to get to the top and back down which was a 7km hike.
We were fortunate that it was dry really until we got about 1km from the bottom but I would recommend bringing spare layers and waterproofs if there is a risk of rain.
Loved it....

The landmark mountain could be viewed at almost any point in Yufuin! Viewing it with clear blue skies or cloudy day gives a different feel!

The main reason for our stay in Yufu was to climb Mt. Yufu, and we were not disappointed. There weather was awesome (March 27). We left the parking lot at the bottom (you should get a parking space...there are two parking lots. The one near the main entrance is recommended). From bottom to top, it took us 4 hours, not rushing. The terrain changes as you ascend, along with the temperature. Dress accordingly and be prepared to dress and undress as you go up and down (wow, that sounds romantic!), if you know what I mean. Anyway, when we got to the top, we had lunch, which we brought. The view was awesome, but that could be said for the many viewpoints along the well-made path all the way up. Do it, enjoy, then hit the hot springs in Yufu. You'll need it. Enjoy!

We had an organized hike lead by the most famous Japanese skier, climber and adventurer, Miura Gota. The climb was easy and we enjoyed good weather so we were quite lucky.
