Not very far from Tokyo this Zen temple garden offers one of the finest Momiji viewing around Tokyo. You can take some food & drinks and have an unforgettable picnic sitting amidst the vibrant autumn colors.

We had a wonderful walk around the grounds of the Heirinji Temple, and were able to get away from the background rumble of traffic noise, and just sit and think for a while. A little oasis in a busy world!
There are some interesting buildings here, and also some , nice planting for people who like their plants. The maples must be wonderful in autumn, but we are a little too early to see that. Autumn, I am told by my Japanese friend, starts in two weeks.
Across the road, next to the car park, is a little cafe who could not be more welcoming to us a visitors. I tried the green tea ice cream; next time I will have the vanilla, but I just had to try it! I get the feeling this temple is not on the usual tourist route which is why it was so quiet, but people should come here. as this is not a museum piece, it is a real working temple as much alive today as when it was built.

Heirin-ji is an extraordinary Zen temple, not just for its aesthetic charms, but also because it is a "working" temple. This place is not an artifact, but a 600-year-old living, breathing example of the Zen tradition.
The grounds are most famous for their maple trees (autumn) as well as plum blossoms (early spring). This is a much better place to get a feel for Zen temples, and temple life, than you will find in the overcrowded tourist centers.
Definitely worth the short hike from Tokyo!
