Partial archaeological excavations have found that Inariyama Tumulus belongs to an important lord or owake who served Wakatakeru no Ookimi. Wakatakeru inscribed in the iron sword buried in the tumulus is also known as Emperor Yuryaku (21st Emperor according to the official genealogy), who was recorded also by the Chinese in the Book of Song as 倭王武 and one of the Five Kings of Japan (Yamato, Wa). The sword is kept at the archaeological museum also located in the complex.

Maruhakayama Tumulus is the largest circular mound in Japan and was used as an encampment by the Toyotomi forces led by Ishida Mitsunari in his grand seige of Oshi Castle against the Hojo-aligned forces in 1590. Parts of the impressively long embankment that Ishida Mitsunari constructed upon orders from Toyotomi Hideyoshi in a failed attempt to flood Oshi Castle remain.

All that is now history. The area is particularly beautiful in early April with cherry blossom. People interested in the history of Japan would love this place.

Kofun - the Anceint Burial Mounds are the tombs of the powerful people. In this park, you can see 9 Kofun founded during the 5th to the 7th centuries. You can climb to the tops of 2 Kofun among them, Maruhakayama and Inariyama.
Walking around and observing each Kofun in the large park is a fun. You may imagine how the Kofun was built and who did. Kofun are big and you will be impressed.
Also see the shapes of most of those Kofun are the combination of square and circle. That's the typical of Japanese Kofun.
I'd like to recommend you to prepare sneakers for walking and climbing. It may take more than 2 hours if you enjoy walking all around the park.

This is something for people who are interested in Japans early history. The Kofun park has a number of 5th/6th century burial mounds with a small museum and reconstructed burila chamber. The peculiar keyhole shape which is unique to Japan can be observed here.
It makes a great day trip because Gyoda station is easily reached in just below one 1hr from Ueno Station and a free bicycle rental is provided by the local tourist information. Oshi castle, several shrines, and the ancient lotus park are additional sights worth visiting.
