Many long green (beginner) runs to learn to ski (I was an absolute beginner at the start of this week). Amazing scenery too!

Holy Hell - what a great spot. Loads of restos & bars - including vegetarian which is rare in Japan.
Snow was awesome, mountains were great.

Came for 3 days of ski and had a blast. Though temp climbed as high as 15degrees in our 3rd day, there was still plenty of snow! Each day we tried a new resort - Akakura Onsen, Akakan and Suginohara. Our fav has to be Akakan aka Akakura Kanko.
We used Yodel Snow School and Mr Hiroshi arranged for us American coaches who has grown their roots in Japan. They were patient and kept us safe on the mountains.
Would love to come back again.

The snow here was wonderful! And there are plenty of areas to ski/board. However they are spread out, and you can not ski between them with out buying another pass or multi pass.
Personally I don't think it is worth spending a day on more than one ski area. As you will spend too much time travelling between. It would be best to just pick one ski area to play on for the day then try another one another day.
Kanko and Akakura are great for beginners and right in town.
Plenty of cafes, restaurants, shops and gear rental places in town.
It is still a small place, so it's really only 1-2 streets to explore.
There are onsens but they are also spread out. There was a lovely looking outdoor one I wanted to try but seems like it is closed in winter!

Good snow, friendly town, access to several ski fields. Cheap lift tickets! Easy train or bus from Tokyo. What more do you need? Not over-run by 20 something shredders!

Absolutely blown away by this beautiful town just 2 hours from Tokyo. Long weekend skiing turned into me falling in love with the most magical resort. Incredible snowfall, the friendliest people and a surprising amount of places to eat and shop. All I ask is you visit respectfully and keep this place the secret that it is.

From the moment we stepped out of the train and we were the only ones on the platform, we knew this place was going to be great. It immediately had that Small country feel that we love. One quick call to our accommodation and 10mims later we were being picked up and taken back to the hotel even though we were a couple of hours early. We quickly discovered that there is one Main Street in Myoko Kogen and it is the destination for most of the restaurants and souvenir shops, the post office and ski rentals. Everything is within walking distance which is fabulous. We had an absolute ball here as it was quite a bit less touristy as other areas we’d visited and the snow was abundant....and I mean abundant!! The 2 ski resorts here...Akakura Onsen and Akakura Kanko suited our level perfectly and with the style of boarding we like to do. The only thing is, if you like getting among the trees....it can be quite dangerous and although this is something we really love to do, we weren’t game to do it here. There were more signs on the mountains than Hakuba ( Hakuba is truly lacking in this area) which was great to help us navigate. If you aren’t a skier or snowboarder then there probably isn’t too much to do in this area except experience traditional onsens. I loved the whole onsen thing, from the yukatas to the initial awkwardness of being naked in front of other people (a lot of times I was alone though) and it was wonderfully soothing after a hard day on the mountain. I highly recommend going to Myoko Kogen and we will definitely be back some day.

Thanks so much for your lengthy review Mamaselle and glad you had a great time!
Just a couple of hints for your next trip.
Next time head to Ikenotaira Onsen where the trees are better trimmed and the slope angle is a bit easier.
The main street you refer to is Akakura Onsen. Myoko Kogen is the area around the train station
There are lots of things to do but maybe not obvious. Please search for "Myoko Day Tours" and "Things to do in Myoko". We can't provide the direct links unfortunately.

Booked my 6- year- old child for a half day group ski lesson today. He has thoroughly enjoyed his ski lesson and gained strong confidence in skiing. We wanted to thank his ski instructor, Mr Tako Sensei for the wonderful lesson. Our son commented that Mr Tako Sensei is the best sensei ever! We highly recommend this ski school to anyone who wants to learn skiing.

Hi, can you tell me the exact name of the accommodation you stayed at please? We are looming for a recommendation, we are a couple, looking for somewhere with our own bathroom if possible. Did your accommodation include meals?
Ditulis pada 20 Oktober 2019
Sorry, we've only just seen this. Not sure who you were addressing the question to.
Most foreign visitors stay around Akakura - you can check many options via our website or by completing our accommodation request form. There are quite a few hotels with ensuite, although I highly recommend enjoying local onsen hot springs. Lots more general information about shuttles, resorts, etc., is available via the Destination Joetsu Myoko website.
Hope you find/found something suitable.

We are looking for somewhere new to go to. We’ve been to hakaba and twice to nozawa Onsen, which we love. We are looking for something similar in a small village atmosphere with skiing close by. Is that what Myoko Kogen is like?
Any recommendations for accommodation. Jan 2020?
Ditulis pada 2 April 2019
You'll probably like Akakura Onsen which is at the base of two resorts (Akakura Onsen and Akakura Kanko). FYI Myoko Kogen is the village & train station at the bottom of the hill.
January 2020 is already getting quite busy for a few hotels. If you send us your details via our Destination Myoko Kogen website (sorry - not allowed to include the link) we're happy to suggest a few available options.

Hi there, I have a trip in early December (2-5 Dec), will there be snow for snowboarding?
Ditulis pada 26 Februari 2019
Hello,
I have a trip planned for Jan 2019, but I have broken my arm so can no longer snowboard. Is there much other stuff to do in myoko?
Thanks:-)
Ditulis pada 7 Desember 2018
Hi Jen, just plug "Things to do in Myoko" and "Day tours from Myoko" into Google (sorry, TA doesn't allow direct links). Those will give you plenty of options. Enjoy Myoko!

Hi GFLizzy, I can only eat gluten free food too because I am coeliac. We are planning to go to Myoko Kogen and I'm a little concerned about the food so I was very happy to read your review. Can you please give me some names of places where you ate in town? Did you find anything at all which was gluten free to eat on the mountain? That has been my problem in the past. Many thanks in advance and hope you enjoyed the snow! Belinda

Hi Belinda
A few tips. Bring bread with you as I did not find any Hf bread in Japan. Also bring some GF Soy sauce. Bring snacks. I got a sign made in Japanese and symbols to explain my allergies. At Myoko at the Snow sports they have a list of restuarants that are Gluten Free that you can go to. At the back of the snow sports store is a fabulous cafe - Panaroma- that serves lots of GF food❤️. The chef is gf so is very aware. Even had cakes! We also ate at the Japanese restaurant across the road which had GF soy sauce and meals. We stayed at Hotel Central and they served a GF teppanki dinner, if you provide the soy sauce. There was also a bar that was on the Main Street that was down some tricky stairs to a fun space. They served GF Mexican food. On the mountain itself I did not find GF food but us not far to go to The Panaroma cafe for lunch. Good luck and enjoy! GFLizzy

Only Akakura Onsen and Akakura Kanko (Akakan) resorts are adjacent. A joint ticket is available for 4,800-5,000 yen a day. Other resorts are accessible via shuttle or some hotels offer free shuttles (check when booking). Most foreign visitors stay around Akakura - you can check many options via our website or by completing our accommodation request form. Can someone please tell us if Myoko Kogen is a direct ski in ski out property please?
Ditulis pada 29 April 2017
It's not a 'property' Jamiejim7, it's a resort area, made up of 5 separate ski resorts. You will need to consider various accommodation options within those resorts. However please be aware that ski in, ski out options are limited. Some of those are quite away from restaurants, shuttle buses and other facilities, so you need to balance this out. Hope this helps! More information and many accommodation options are available via our website.

Hi, we will not be staying at a ryokan this coming trip to Myoko and I would like to ask if there are any public onsens we can visit in the area.
Cheers. W
Ditulis pada 8 Januari 2017
There are no public onsen but you are able to visit the onsen at different hotels. Usual cost is 500-1,000 yen. Ask your hotel for more details when you arrive.
