The Scarzuola in an interesting place from an architectural point of view. Stemmed from Architect Buzzi’s vision it was later acquired by the current owner who has completed the original plan. It is all built in “tufo” and it looks much older than it really is. A bit absurd but immensly creative with amusing details that draw curiosity. Definitely worth a visit.
And now to the negative aspect that ruins the whole experience: A guided tour of almost 100 people is definitely too much to follow. The owner explains very little about the place and way too much about his vision and philosophy of the world and current state of politics. One and half hour of very profane ranting and three minutes of information on the site.
Luckily, we are a bilingual couple so we could take advantage of kindest Brian, an Australian who has lived there for 32 years, who gave us the tour in English and allowed us to skip the b. s.
If you go, make sure you ask for an English tour while making the reservation. Then you will enjoy the place.
I believe we were the only one coming out happy from the experience. Thank you Brian!

We didn't get in because by the time we got there (11am) the doors were closed since they apparently only do one tour a day (only on Saturday & Sunday) that starts somewhere between 10 and 11 am. Tip: check, check, double check if you can go in before you drive up there because the road is pretty rocky, swirly and steep.

Intriguing and idiosyncratic architecture but an experience ruined by the guide, who is also the owner. From the outset, he made it clear (with frequent profanity even with children present) he would not consider questions or interruption.

We had been told a minimum of 8 people was needed to make a group: in the event, there were numerous such groups and over 100 people, masked but far from socially distant and certainly not in the spirit of Covid 19 regulations.

The owner spent much time haranguing the assembled throng with a largely irrelevant stream of consciousness and little was to be learned about the place...we speak fluent Italian and found each sentence was garbled and concluded with a clap of his hands.

Unfortunately, It was not possible to wander away from the group and enjoy the place: there was a minder who watched and made people stay with the over-large group. Some years ago, it was possible to wander and thus more interesting. It would be far better to have smaller groups with professional guides who have some liking of (and respect for) paying visitors. people felt their presence was resented but their payment welcome. At the end people were bluntly told to get out as he stood by the gate...John Cleese in his portrayal of Basil Fawlty had far greater charm.

This extraordinary architectural feat is well worth a visit. The owner conducts the tours himself and in the end, we wandered away from his endless tales to enjoy the place by ourselves. You need to reserve via website and the minimum amount of visitors is ten.

We went on a Sunday tour, conducted in Italian, not knowing that it was possible to go on an English speaking tour. The man who did those tours seemed nice and knowledgeable

However, the Italian tour guide, Marco, who is the owner, did not seem to care about his group, who paid 10€ each. He lived for the sound of his own voice, laughing at his own jokes. The tour went so slowly that we (and others) asked him to open up the gate and let us out before we even got to the inside of the theaters or the church. That was after ninety minutes. Then we couldn’t leave because the parking area is so small that we we blocked in by later arrivals.

His friend, the English speaker, an Australian, told me that his tours are very different.

Not recommended if Marco is your guide.

The park was really beautiful, unfortunately the owner was very rude, every other word out of his mouth was a swear word. That made it an extremely unpleasant visit no matter how fascinating the park was. He started by insulting the visitors at the beginning of the tour, then went on to lecture us about the world and the political situations of Italy with the most vulgar form possible. I went with 2 friends because I had seen such beautiful pictures from the internet and was hoping for a nice walk around the garden with the guild telling us about the planning, construction and history behind the man who built the garden, instead we got a torrent of insults. I won't suggest anyone to go unless you can overlook the owner's behavior which I found it quite hard to do though at some point I stopped listening. If I had to pay to get insulted I might as well stay at home.

La Scarzuola was built on the site of a convent founded in 1218 by St. Francis of Assisi. The Saint is said to be responsible for the beautiful gardens in a woodland setting.

In 1956, a Milanese architect, Tomaso Buzzi, purchased the property, and set upon an ambitious plan to develop his vision for “The Ideal City” based on an obscure book published in 1499. Hypnerotomachia Poliphili is an allegory, where the protagonist pursues the love of his life in a dreamlike landscape.

The psychologist Carl Jung admired the book, believing the dream images presaged his theory of archetypes. That should tell you all you need to know – this place is bizarre!

The current owner, Marco Solari, is still attempting to complete the work his uncle began.

We spent about 90 minutes walking the property, listening to Solari explain his (strange) beliefs on science, religion, architecture, music, and any other thought that popped into his head. He very often referred to himself as a “visionary” but we heard many of the other guests mumbling lunatico.

Many of the buildings have been designed in the Gaudiesque style. The grounds are beautiful in a disjointed and rambling way.

The art is a combination of ancient and modern, and is sometimes creepy.

Most of the gardens were not well maintained, but there were exceptions, like in the cloister which had beautiful roses.

At one point Mr. Solari was encouraging people come join him here in this ideal setting. There is plenty of room to build the home of your dreams, no matter how strange it may look. There does not seem to be anything like a Design Review Board.

We were not allowed inside the historic convent and monastery. We only had access to the modern parts of the property.

La Scarzuola is a magnificent place, a true folly filled with architectural symbolism and mysticism, and well worth visiting. Be prepared, though, to put up with the owner who is also the 'tour guide' around the grounds. You'd be better off to simply ignore him - if you listen to his ranting and raving, punctuated every couple of seconds by 'You don't understand', you'll learn precious little about the project. You'll have to endure much talk about conspiracies, artificial intelligence, and the like (when he started drifting on to terrorism and vaccinations, we drifted off). Much better to hang back from the group and take in all the sights and sounds of this strange place.

Proprietario maleducato. Non adatto ai bambini. The owner is a very bad person. It isn't a good idea to go there with children I think.
