Bottom Line Up Front: Well worth the entrance fee. Not to be missed! This is an outstanding history of nativity scenes and folk art. I have been staying in Lutago, but using it as a "jumping off" point for visiting the region. With rain in the forecast for the afternoon I wanted to find something closer to the hotel. I found the Museum Maranatha up the street a few houses! From the street it looks plain. The "curb appeal" is not bad, but it didn't make me want to see more. But, I'd read about the museum online, so I knew that I wanted to go inside. The man at the reception was very welcoming. He spoke both German and Italian fluently. He invited me to take photos (so I will have a couple to share). The majority of the museum is underground, on different levels, and has nativity scenes from around Europe, and a few other countries. The displays range from clay to wood carvings to painted figurines to crystal. The artist is frequently available to talk to visitors. I was very impressed with this museum. I hope you'll like it, too!

The sign on the front of the building proclaims it as the Museum Maranatha, also called the Krippenmuseum (German) and Museo dei Presepi (Italian). The emphasis here is clearly on the presepi/nativity scenes, but there are many other examples of top-notch woodcarving, including some wonderfully horrific krampus (Christmas demon) masks that would impress even jaded teens. There is a woodcarving studio/workshop attached to the museum.

My wife and I collect Italian nativity figures, and have purchased a number of traditional Neapolitan presepi among the shops of the via San Gregorio Armeno in the historic center of Bella Napoli. When we were planning our trip to the far north, I wanted to see and, if possible, purchase some of the traditional Tyrolean carved wooden figures. I researched options before leaving home, and this museum was at the top of my list (and also conviently close to our hotel in Campo Tures).

Everything in the museum is well organised and pleasantly presented. The buildings themslves are clean and attractive. Footstools are provided so that little people can easily see the many displays. The bathroom belongs in a palace. There are places to sit. Photography is allowed. The giftshop is a dream come true for someone like me. Overwhelming, actually, but the ladies at the counter were patient and answered my many questions as best they could. The do indeed sell wooden nativity figures, both those carved on the premises, and from other regional producers.

Although traditional Tyrolean "cribs" hold pride of place here, there are many styles displayed, including beautiful Neapolitan examples. One is lifesized. Some date back to the 1800s. Others are collaborative efforts by modern masters of the craft, involving woodcarvers, clothiers, scenery painters, etc.

If you have any interest in woodcarving, folk art, or Christmas traditions, you should make an effort to visit the Maranatha Museum.
