Take a tour with a docent. They are knowledgeable and bring perspective to the exhibits. It was outstanding. One of the best things we did in the SantaFe area.

This is a delightful museum, not too big, packed with New Mexico's history. What made this visit so special was a tour with Greg, a wonderful docent, who began by telling us that he would be talking about the exhibits that he found especially meaningful, and that he hoped we would enjoy the visit. I can't speak for any of the others, but Greg did indeed take me on a wonderful walk through the state's history! If you go, try to take a tour with a docent and hopefully you'll have as informative and fascinating visit as I did!

We knew very little about Santa Fe and the southwest before our visit. This museum presented the region’s history in a concise, digestible and interesting way. The story of the events and personalities who made the West helped explain the various phases-native Americans, Spanish arrival, white settlers, Billy the Kid, etc. Highlights were the story of Fred Harvey and his hotels with the famous “Harvey Girls,” the Manhattan project, WWII and the code talkers, and the Governor’s Palace. Don’t miss this museum!

It was kind of a disappointment. It seems that the 'curation' fad has hit the museum. The modern part of the museum seemed kind of barren. Not much in the way of artifacts, way too much in the way of 'stories'. The Governor's palace wasn't worth the visit. I had been in it some years ago. It was chock full of interesting articacts and information. Now. only a couple rooms had anything in them and it was just informational signs. It may be that they are doing renovation or major maintenance. I hope that's the case. An exception: the display on the printing industry in NM. Excellent.

Terrific museum in the heart of Santa Fe. The exhibits are arranged in chronological order detailing New Mexico history from its original inhabitants to current times. Everything is explained in English and Spanish and is in large print to make for easy reading. This is one of the better state history museums I have been to!

The New Mexico History Museum, 113 Lincoln Avenue, open daily 10am-5pm ($12/adult, 16 and under are free) encompasses The Palace of the Governors and tells the story of Spanish colonization, the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, and New Mexico’s journey to statehood through permanent and changing exhibitions.

Gradually I've taken a liking to these state history museums. Some feel neglected, but this is better than average, upper 20% maybe. Lots to see, and at the moment an interesting local exhibit on Fred Harvey hospitality - new to me, and enjoyed learning about him / the business. Otherwise standard fare (NM through time) but nicely presented and an interesting variety of objects, with enough text to keep you learning. Not geared toward kids (i.e. not much interactive), but I actually prefer this type - I'm looking to learn vs. play. Can easily spend 2 hours. Friendly staff, including the gift shop. Very relaxed if you need to go add time to a meter, grab food, etc.

There were 5 of us in attendance to the museum - the two 19 year olds found the museum interesting. The 16 year old and two almost 50 year olds weren't quite as intrigued. There are not many interactive exhibits, so only go if you like to read!

The history of New Mexico is interesting as it features the interactions of the native peoples with the Spanish colonizers - with some surprising twists. The museum is a march through time and starts with the native people and their pre-colonial lives. I found it interesting that following the Spanish occupation of New Mexico, that the Pueblo Indians organized a rebellion in 1680 which successfully drove the Spanish out of the state. Also interesting was that after the Spanish returned a dozen years later, a sort of peace was agreed to between the two warring parties. Towards the end of the museum there was a lot of space devoted to the World War II participation by New Mexicans, including over a 1,000 of them being in the Bataan Death March and the use of code talkers by the US marines. The history was interesting and well presented. I wasn't as interested in the attached Governor's Building and zipped through it.

This was a great museum to learn about NM history while we were there. It has a very engaging and modern display, and was just big enough. It's in the heart of Santa Fe so worth a stop in if you're around the Plaza.
