What a find. Old navy station converted over to a mixed use retail/ restaurant complex. The buildings retain many of the features from the original barracks and serve up a cultural plethora of food from Taiwan, Italian, Filipino to Maine Lobster and regional cuisine. Everything we sampled was delicious and reasonably priced.
Plenty of outdoor seating with breathtaking views of the immaculate grounds and downtown. Parking was convenient and plentiful at 6 p.m. on a Friday night.
Bonus. Some of the scenes from Top Gun were shot here and it is fun seeking out those sites from those movie scenes.
Easy 20 minute drive from Mission Valley.
Next time you are in San Diego, take some time to explore this unique culinary destination

On the first Friday of every month this gallery and museum area has an open house. Entry is free and this area is alive with sights and sounds. Many places also offer free nibbles to enjoy.

I was in San Diego on business for the night and the hotel front desk clerk recommended walking to Liberty Station. I live in SoCal and never heard of it but WHAT A FIND!!! I loved this place so much. It is a former Navy Training Center that has been converted into parks, restaurants, shops and little attractions like the base’s former chapel and commander’s house. All kinds of restaurants, breweries, outdoor patios and shops. I’ve asked so many people that I know in Southern California and almost no one has heard of Liberty Station, but after visiting there I do not understand why. It’s incredible and worth a stop if you are in San Diego!

First Fridays is a special time at the Arts District of Liberty Station. Usually from 5 - 8 many of the private galleries and museums hold open houses. In September, 2019, outdoor popup markets and on stage music performances were sometimes added. For a fun Friday night in the city for the price of gasoline and shoe leather, go to First Friday at Liberty Station.

We went to Liberty Station to go to the Visions Quilt Museum. It’s a very small, 3 or 4 rooms, but has some great exhibits. This area was part of the naval station, and many of the buildings have been repurposed. There’s a really good bakery cafe across the street.

Probably nice for the locals, but for me, it's a stop off on way to the airport after gassing up the rental car. Grab coffee, watch a few planes take off across the water (pretty close). Shops long closed in the evening / not much to do unless you're having a meal.

I love Liberty Station.. what a way to transform an old military outpost. Museums, art galleries, restaurants, even Von's grocery.. are located in this restored parklike space. Be prepared to spend a few hours, and check local websites for cultural activities and show. The only drawback are the planes taking off from nearby Lindbergh Field

Completely repurposed from an old naval base, Liberty Station has a bunch of really nice restaurants and lots of shopping for you to enjoy. Walk around, browse and eat. What's better than that. There's a Trader Joe's up here and a movie theater too. Only downside is that you are in the flight path for San Diego Airport so there will be a lot of noise in the sky.

I read some of the other reviews, and was not sure what I would see. I was hoping to find local artisans where I could buy local work, but most of them seemed to be closed (went on Saturday). I walked to several buildings, going upstairs to where the studios are located, but many were not there. At the far end is a huge open market place with food stalls and folks selling items, but not what I was looking for. As mentioned by others, very spread out. I think if you go for a specific class/event it would be satisfying but to just stroll around is tiring.

We will be traveling to this area June 23 to 25th. Will the Art Museum be open or partially open
at that time?
Thank You
Yes, ARTS DISTRICT will be partially open. Since we have over 16 buildings with over 100 galleries, museums and working artist studios, not all will be fully open as each business is unique and will open as they are able. We will definitely have some dining open, if you call ahead to Solare you can make a reservation to eat at their amazing Italian restaurant. You can find a list of the businesses that are open during this time on our Liberty Station Website too.
I would also say check out Barracks 19 at 2690 Historic Decatur Rd., upstairs is all working artist studios and there is a cafe on the lower level called Chi Chocolat. Liberty Station is also a great place to walk/bike around with large promenades and outdoor public art to view. Thank you for your interest in making Liberty Station one of your trip destinations. We hope you stay safe and enjoy your visit!

I would say yes. It is always more crowded on the weekends.

How far is it from the international airport? What public transportation can I take to reach the place? Thanks for advice

Liberty Station is about 3 km (2 miles) from the airport. San Diego has a bus system, but we used Uber to get around. I'd suggest Uber to get from the airport to Liberty Station. It would probably cost less than $10.
