We enjoyed walking the trails with our puppy dogs - nice that they are pet friendly. Trails could be better marked. We did not do the tour of the main building since we had our pups with us and some other buildings on the grounds were closed and undergoing renovation. The General Store was open and we enjoyed perusing the items for sale. Staff were very friendly and helpful in suggesting other historic sites to visit in the area. Definitely worth a stop.

In the rolling hills of eastern Catawba County, Murray’s Mill is located where it was nearly a century ago: on the banks of Balls Creek.
John Murray built the mill in 1913. His father, William, had operated a mill on the site since 1883. In 1906, William deeded the property to his sons, John and Ollie. In 1907, John Murray acquired a 5/6 interest from his brother Ollie, who would take over the operation of the family general store. In 1913, John replaced his father’s mill with the current two-story structure, adding a 22’ overshot waterwheel to replace the former turbine. In 1938, John’s son, Lloyd, raised the dam six feet and installed the 28’ waterwheel (it’s said that William’s original wooden dam stands beneath the surface of the present pond).
Three generations of the Murray Family operated the mill before bureaucratic red tape and increasing taxes forced Lloyd Murray, John’s son, to close its doors in 1967. The mill was the last one in the Catawba County, so the Catawba County Historical Association (CCHA) worked to restore it. Preservation efforts started in 1980. When they were complete, the CCHA in 1986 held an opening ceremony that attracted such notables as North Carolina Governor James G. Martin.
Murray’s Mill is now a National Register Historic Site and open to the public. There, visitors will find William’s original, one-ton French buhr millstones, for grinding corn, as well as a Eureka roller mill that John installed for grinding wheat into flour. All of the mill’s storage bins, each partitioned by tongue and groove sheathing, have been preserved, too. Murray’s Mill is a short drive from Interstate 40. Visit the old country store located across the road & step back into the 1800s. It's amazing how well preserved this store is & a reminder of what was!

Adorable shop with local artists unique items in wood, glass, soaps, and crafts. There are Seasonal items, ice cream, candy and a history lesson shared by the local historian tending the store front. This is a good stop to stretch your legs and see an old mill with mill stones on the property. A tiny hike along the stream if you like nature. We picked up local apples and a beautiful wooden quilt square created by a local artist. We have stopped here previously and will come again. They have small festivals too.

Jennifer and Michelle were great hosts when we visited on 06/24/21. The general store was fantastic with locally made food and artesian/craft items. The mill and farm were a step back in time, very peaceful and we had a lot of fun. Pet friendly also.

This is a nice historical mill. The area is beautiful. We didn’t walk the entire lake at the mill but it’s just a very peaceful setting. The general store takes you back in time with so many items available

This is a beautiful spot to walk around and stretch your legs or have a picnic. Water pours over the spillway and into the creek. You can walk down the creek a ways to enjoy the view. We weren’t able to go inside the building because it was closed for Easter.

The inside of the mill with the informational signs and all of the milling equipment is closed right now due to state restrictions, but you can still stop by and visit the store. The outside of the mill is impressive. It’s a great place to stop for a picnic lunch or to grab a snack from the store. There are picnic tables as well as a trail by the creek if you are up for a hike. They also have a variety of locally made crafts and artisan items for sale in the store. They have some events, during which they are grinding, which is a great way to see the mill working. Check out their Facebook page to stay up to date on their events. If you are in the area or passing through, it’s worth a stop!

The falls and mill are very beautiful and right next to path. They have a ladder to climb down to bottom of it but I had my dog with me so another time, on the other side you can follow a path along the river very peaceful.

I'd suggest calling the mill @ 828-241-4299 & ask them directly.
