The views at the top are worth the climb! It is a decent hike to the 3 viewing areas at the top- many steep stairs, but they have railings. There is also an option of an easier hiking route vs more advanced. Probably close to 100 stairs. Gorgeous views of Lake Superior along with Marquette and the surrounding areas. Lots of pretty fall color!

This is a very cool hike, although it has lots of stairs so you need to be physically fit (I think there are around 270 stairs on the trail). I am 62 with two knee replacements and made it fine. The views from the top are spectacular and well worth the climb. One word of warning though. If you plug the address into your GPS it will take you to an empty parking lot near a railroad track. The actual trails are a few miles further down Sugarloaf Mountain Road. Also, there are two parking lots. One has a rougher trail to the top and the other the more developed trail. The lot with the bathroom is the one we prefer with the more developed trail. We started at the other trail head and it was a little too rough for my knees, so went back to the other trailhead which was better. Overall, I highly recommend Sugarloaf Mountain!

We visited Sugarloaf Mountain over Labor Day weekend. We did not expect the temperatures to be in the triple digits. The climbing is steep in spots but doable. The view from the top is breathtaking and well worth the climb.

Best hike we've done in a long time! Lots of interesting views along the way, not too long. We parked at the southern parking lot and only hiked the "improved" trail on the eastern side of the loop and then hiked up the staircases to the overlook.

Nice moderate hike. Go for the views!! if stairs are too boring for you, you can take the rough trail next to the stairs for a real hiking experience!

Excellent parts of this experience:
1. The views are excellent and expansive ... it really gives a feel for the breadth of Lake Superior!!
2. It's also dog friendly, which was super fun. We didn't have our dogs with us, but we passed at least 10 other pooches.
Suggestions:
1. I agree with some of the other reviews that the signage is misleading or unclear. We parked at the upper lot and ended up going to the right ... and I'm still not sure which path that actually was!
2. I feel like the descriptions on AllTrails and other sites are a little misleading, as it rates the hike as easy, saying there are just a few stairs near the top. Again, I'm not sure if I took the more difficult path or not, but 75% of the hike was going up stairs. And while they weren't a deterrent, it's harder to pause on stairs and it takes more bursts of energy. So if someone in your group has mobility issues, there is no way they can hike this. Also, we saw one poor older dog being carried because he just couldn't get up the stairs :(.
3. There seemed to be a distinct amount of "non-nature lovers" at the summit when we were there and then again along the route. By this, I mean people who were hiking up with beer or alcohol, then groups at the top that were drinking and throwing their cans into crevices while simultaneously screaming at their teenage children for not appreciating them enough. This could totally be an isolated incident, but I had never experienced that before ... usually hiking gets me away from annoying people :).

If you're visiting Marquette and enjoy hiking, then Sugarloaf Mountain is a must see. Nowhere else in the area can you get such unique views of Lake Superior, the city and coastal features like Presque Isle and the ore docks. The hike is not long at all. It is steep at times and has a good number of steps. But if you're in decent shape and wear good shoes, you should have no problem getting to the top to soak in the views!

We enjoyed the climb, but although we were aware there was two ways to the top it wasn't clear where each started. Anyhoos we got to the top and it was well worth the climb.

If you don't mind a moderate walk containing about a million stairs (okay, maybe a few hundred?) this is worth the trek. The views at the top are stunning. We took the "easy" route and still had a fair bit of stairs.

I read one of the reviews that stated no restrooms here. Is that true?

No restrooms is correct, it's only a parking lot then you get right on the trail.

How long did it take to do the hike round trip?

I'd say it depends on your age and physical shape. We are not young and we took our time both getting there and taking in the view at the top. It probably took us 40 minutes or so getting there and taking in the view. We made better time on the way back as it was getting dark.

How difficult is the climb and how long does it take for an older couple walking at a leisurely pace (lots of breaks!) Thanks.

There are a lot of stairs on the easy trail that could make it difficult for anyone who has trouble with climbing stairs. At a slow pace, I'm guessing at least 20 mins. But is they have difficulty climbing stairs, this could be difficult. Also...if it has been rainy, it will make it harder walking.
Does it cost anything

Amanda, I did not pay anything, and I looked for a way to pay. I think this is a free park open to the public. Enjoy!

What is the best time of the day to visit the Sugarloaf Mountain, considering the weather/views?
P.S. I will be visiting last week of May

The sunsets seen off of Sugarloaf are really beautiful. It's about a 20 minute hike up and again to hike down. So if you plan to stay for the whole sunset, be sure to bring a flashlight for the hike back down.

Hi. I would like to know how to get from New Franken, WI to Sugarloaf Mountain, MI. Where can I find a map?

Following up on Elaine S's answer, Sugarloaf Mountain is on the right side of the road. It is quite hilly and curvy in that section of CR 550 so take it slow.
