I loved seeing this creation. Everything in the house is made out of paper. And you can see the newspaper stories in the furniture. It is unique and lovely. It is maintained by donations although they do suggest two dollars a person. I found it fascinating.

through all kinds of weather including the blizzard of 1978 and the “perfect storm” of 1991. What is astounding is that this summer cottage and its furniture are made of paper!

Elis Stenman, aided by his family, began his project in 1922 - newspapers were folded, glued and varnished to fashion a house. These were affixed to the wooden framework. The cottage was livable starting in 1924, and he continued to make furniture. By the time he was done, he had used about 100,000 copies of newspapers.

It’s fun to walk through and read the headlines of the past. The writing desk highlights Lindbergh’s flight, and the grandfather’s clock the capital cities of the states.

If you’re in the area, it’s definitely a curiosity worth visiting.

Disappointed it wasn't open for touring. I guess the people living in the nearby house don't want the money that could be generated by people like me willing to see it.

Just outside Rockport is the curious Paper House. The entire house including walls, doors and much of the furniture inside was made out of newspapers by a mechanical engineer in 1922. I'm not sure quite how it's still standing, but it's amazing to see and has running water, electricity, a stove and even a working fireplace!

We really enjoyed our brief tour on our own here. There is a box in which to drop your $2 pp fee in the house adjacent to it since they are the owners. There is written information on a desk inside the house answering your questions with postcards for an additional charge.

This was a recommendation from someone who lives in the area. Quirky is a great description! It’s off the beaten path and if you’re in the Rockport area and are interested in something unique and quick to do, then this should be on your list. The structure is made completely of paper. “Furniture” is also made of tightly rolled newspapers. As you look more closely, it goes from quirky to really interesting to think of what was made and how it was put together. A lot of thought and purposeful placement of some headlines. Check it out

Off the beaten track in the Pigeon Cove area of Rockport, the house is an example of New England quirkiness. It is constructed with a wood supporting structure but the walls, ceiling, and exterior walls are all made of newspapers, as are the wide variety of furnishings and even parts of a piano. It is the ultimate in n off- the-beaten track attraction.

Driving from Salem, we stopped here after searching out the viewpoint of Thatcher Island’s 2 1771 Lighthouses just 5 mi southeast. It was easy to find with pretty Rockport sitting in the middle. This is an atlas obscura “quirky place” but we were surprised to see, several other tourists out here. The builder, a mechanical engineer in 1924, collected, rolled and glued 100,000 newspapers to construct his summer home, using 215 layers of newspaper to make the ½” walls, and tight rolling for chair frames and other furniture. The marine grade varnish he used for preservation still does its job and advertisements of the age are still visible.
We stopped at the Pigeon Cove Fisherman's Co-Op Harbor 1 mile northeast for a picnic lunch with its active fleet of lobster boats making a nice visit.

This is a quick 20 minute visit that gives a sense of the type of vacation house and pastimes people had in the area 100 years ago: collecting newspapers from around the country, folding and rolling them so that certain headlines and topics stood out, and arranging them into the walls and objects of a small summer retreat. The family has another house on the property so it really feels like being in a private residence, and you leave a few dollars for the self-guided visit at the main house.
Not great for kids (very fragile surroundings); perfect for crafting/engineering and history buffs. There was an origami, scrapbooking and lego vibe to the whole place!

Tucked up in Pigeon Cove (an small enclave between Rockport and Lanesville) - this house is a two room bizarre collection of furniture made from rolled up newspaper - now almost 100 years old. Honor system to pay (suggested price is $2/person, which we happily paid). If you are already in Rockport, take a quick drive up here - just be respectful of the neighborhood and speed.
