Go to the Race Point NPS website first. Don't walk it, get the ORV permit and air down to drive out.

I love going out to the lighthouse and Hatches Harbor as often as we can! For all the negative reviews I've seen, all I can say is it's not for walking! Accessed only by a vehicle with 4wd and an off road permit from the Race Point ORV office. Take the tour when they're offered! Otherwise go to the NPS Race Point website and read what you need to be able to get there! Pay for the sticker, and learn to make the drive. The amount of cars I see stuck trying to drive out on the sand access road ignoring all the signs that say STOP and PERMIT REQUIRED just boggles my mind. Everyone thinks you can just drive right up... you can. You just get to get the permit and know what you're doing. Oversand driving is one of my favorite experiences to enjoy.

Really enjoyed this. Beautiful hike, largely across the marsh to the lighthouse and beach. Beautiful scenery. The hike is certainly not the easiest, much of it on sand which makes it tougher yet. The house and lighthouse are neat to see and then the beach is beautiful. Of course then you get to hike back! So enjoy it but be prepared for the hike and bring some water.

I don’t mind a long walk, and I especially don’t mind a long walk on the beach with a bunch of exciting wildlife, which is why I would highly recommend visiting Race Point Lighthouse if you’re planning a trip to Provincetown. And besides, once you get done walking two miles to the lighthouse, the end result is a stunning panorama of the ocean, the beach, and the beautiful nature we don’t get to see every day. Would go back again and again and again!

Located at the bend of Cape Cod away from the Atlantic and into the bay, this lighthouse has been a landmark and reference point for sailors and travelers for over a century. Accessible by foot, or by a four wheel drive vehicle authorized with a beach pass, this lighthouse represents all the charm and history of Cape Cod's relationship to the ocean. Depending on the weather and time of day, you can see the light and hear the fog horn for miles away. Though the Race Point Lighthouse is no longer operated by a keeper, it is still kept in good working order, and is open to the public as a vacation rental. If you stay overnight, you can see the dark night skies and countless stars, hear the gently rush of the surf or the roar of a stormy sea, and at certain times of year, hear the sounds of whales surfacing and feeding just offshore, and it's likely you'll see seals in the surf as well.

We visited the place last weekend in October. Nice experience. The view is great. Light house is facing East. Sunrise photo is great with sun light shines on the object. The seascape view is not that great because of view angle, kind of awkward angle on both side, East or West.
From reviews, most people talk about the positive aspect of the visit. One thing I would like to point out that the hike is not an easy one for everyone. Before we went, we did not do enough homework, thought we could easily drive there. When we get there, we realize that vehicles are required to have beach permit. Even four wheel drive vehicles have special requirements for permit. We then think we can walk, but with all my photo equipment that is not prepare for hiking, the hike is a tough one. The sand is deep and you are limited on walking only on the vehicle track. You need flash light to walk before sunrise. One step high, next step low - tough. It took us almost two hours to get there. Four hrs of walking on sand back and forth may be a challenge for many. Beware.

A beautiful old lighthouse on a beautiful beach. You should visit if nothing more than to take a photo and a walk on the beautiful white sand beach. It is so New England! I don’t know the history of the lighthouse but it is well worth the trip out to see it.

I happened to see in a guide book that you could stay at this light house, booked on line as fortunately there was a room for the night we wanted (booking well in advance recommended). There are only 3 bedrooms for visitors and one for volunteer light house keepers. Comfortable bedroom, good communal facilities - well equipped kitchen, lounge, back porch, gas BBQ. You have to be organised as you have to bring bedding(sheets and pillow cases) and towels, food and fresh water for drinking and cooking. Also there is a strict pick up ad drop off time just outside Provincetown centre as you can only drive in with a car if you are staying at the Whistle House which is a weekly rental property. Unique experience made even better by the volunteer wardens Sue and Carolyn and the other guests staying there as well. So peaceful and quiet, great to walk along the beach. Amazing bird life and seals in the water 5 meters from beach. Wales can be seen though we didn't. Wardens happy to take you in the light house any time and we did sunset and sunrise - beautiful.
Would love to go back but would definitely stay for more than one night next time.

This was the last of the three lighthouses in Provincetown that I had wanted to hike to. Finally everything fell into place, weather, tides and time to do it. The round trip to the lighthouse and back is just over 4.0 miles (6.75 km) from the Ranger Station. The hike takes you along the immediate shore line of the Atlantic, then over the dunes shortly before reaching the lighthouse. The views are spectacular and the quiet is a great reprieve from the commotion in town. This is a working and manned lighthouse so the lighthouse keepers home is occupied. On this hike I had the opportunity to chat with two of the volunteer keepers. There is a time table posted outlining the history of the lighthouse. This is a relaxing and educational way to spend an afternoon. Bring supplies, have lunch and a dip in the water, carry it in , carry it out, and check the tides so you do not get stranded.Â

A bit of a trek to get out there. Well worth it. You can almost see Europe from here. If you are adventurous there is a station where they will deflate your tires so you can drive out and refill them upon return.

Thanks for visiting! If you are adventurous and have the SUV and equipment necessary, please plan ahead. The road is closed at this time. Also, a sticker obtained from the Park Service is necessary, or there would be a fine $$.

This lighthouse sits 2 1/2 miles from the nearest paved road and is only accessible by foot, boat or off road vehicle (ORV). We got lucky and visited on Mariners Day when the lighthouse was sponsoring free rides (a donation of $5.00 were suggested per person). We were driven out through the dunes in a 4x4 vehicle and allowed to roam the grounds at will and be driven back all for a measly $5.00. The area is gorgeous and you can even reserve nights in the keepers house in season. It was on e of the highlights of our trip.

Not a bad day trip, depending on your time resources.
Suggest you walk to Angel Foods for sandwiches and drinks (assuming you have a day pack), then drive or bicycle to 2 possible locations
Race Point Beach parking (check maps), then walk from the parking lot to the water, take a left and walk until you get to the lighthouse. Walking along the beach is fun and you don't have to worry about the tides. 30-40 minutes later, you'll arrive at the lighthouse.
OR
Educate yourself as to the tides. Do not miss this step!
Go towards Race Point Beach parking, but take the road towards Herring Cove. Park at the first lot on the right (could be wet). Walk out the fire road and you will magically find the lighthouse appear across the inland side of Hatches Harbor. Follow the fire road (it is raised, so safe regardless of tide timing) until you cross the culverts that allow the tidal pools to work properly on both sides of the road. Once past that point, you can get off of the fire road, depending on the tide, and walk towards the lighthouse. Knowing the timing is important for the way back as well. It is a special place. The walk from the parking lot to the lighthouse is about 30-40 minutes unless you stop when you experience amazing things.....
Either way, if you walk past the lighthouse, you'll be between the ocean and Hatches Harbor. Lots of birds. Pay attention to the signs.
Please bring all of your debris back with you!

How difficult a walk and what is distance from the Keepers House to the beach? Thanks.

We drove via jeep from this location to the beach. It's not that far. Maybe hover over on Google Earth, that might give you a good perspective.

Our family which includes grandchildren ages 10 and 12,will be staying in the cottage for two nights in August. Is there anything besides the obvious, food, water and bedding that we should bring?

If you would like a beach fire, bring firewood. The Keeper's House and Whistle House share a fire permit, so provided the weather is cooperative without high winds or rain, a beach fire is okay at the discretion of the Keeper.

Hi, Would I be able to park at Hatches Harbor Parking lot early in the morning, say around 4:30 AM. I would like to walk out to the Lighthouse and set up for some sunrise photography. If yes, is it safe to walk out there in the dark ? Is it possible ? Sorry for all the questions. Appreciate any info you can share. Or would you suggest maybe its more practical to park and walk out there for sunset instead ?
Thanks,
Chris

Sunrise is beautiful, as is sunset. It's very remote to park at the Hatches Harbor lot, but I have not heard of any unsafe activity there. Whatever you are most comfortable with -- daybreak or sunset, it's an easier walk from this parking lot in the Province Lands.

I understand tours are on certain Saturdays, but on any given random day, are people allowed to walk the grounds and see the lighthouse or is the property off limits except on tour days?
RacePointLighthouse
Provincetown, MA4 kontribusi
I apologize for the delay in responding. Yes, you may walk out to the lighthouse and walk around the grounds. There may be a Keeper there who could let you in the lighthouse, but this is not guaranteed. The shortest and easiest walk is from the Hatches Harbor parking lot, which is half way between Race Point Beach and the connecting road to Herring Cove Beach. Also, the Keeper would be able to bring out a few items from the gift shop, if you're interested. The Keeper is a volunteer and all proceeds go to the restoration and preservation of Race Point Lighthouse. Have a nice time!
