This is a quiet gem for any art lover. This museum has a terrific collection of paintings, sculpture, prints and photographs. It is worth an effort to walk up the hill from Northampton's downtown and spend an hour in the peaceful surrounding of wonderful art world.

Beautiful space in which to enjoy the amazing permanent collection... dozens of important paintings by impressionists, cubists. Loved the George Bellows painting of Grand Central Station in NY being excavated... and there were fine paintings by Edward Hopper, Gris, many many others. Huge Frank Stella was very impressive. And the exhibit devoted to the work of Dr. Avery and his AIDS paintings & prints was perfectly curated. Superb.

We are on a quest to see Hopper, American Impressionists, and French Impressionists. Smith's Museum delivered.

We saw the only Hopper, 1939's Pretty Penny, he ever did as a commission. Sargent, Whistler, Glackens, Hassam and others showed the flag. Monet, Renoir, and a large DeGas represented France. And for those that insist, there were Leger, Picasso, and Gris among so many others.

The only downside is that parking may be a challenge. Definitely worth not only a visit but a special trip if already in southern New England.

For a school museum, it's quite a collection. Good to spend a nice relaxing morning or afternoon.
Our visit coincided with my daughters orientation.

I live I Northampton, so I visit this museum not infrequently. If you're in town, you should definitely set aside time for a visit if you're even a bit of a museum-goer. The permanent collection is outstanding and has a world-class array of Impressionist works, with one or more examples from most of the major Impressionist artists. You should also check for current exhibitions. The museum tends to have fairly unusual offerings I this realm, and they're frequently quite thought-provoking. And by the way, don't miss the bathrooms. They are a artistic experience unto themselves.

We ducked in here to dry off after walking through the campus in the rain with few expectations about the art. We left wowed by the quality of the works on display in this small college art museum. Many genres drew our attention, from paintings to multimedia installations. They came from Asia, Africa, Europe, North America and perhaps other areas that got overlooked when I explored three of the building's four floors. During our visit, the first floor was closed for the installation of a temporary exhibition.

Works from antiquity to contemporary filled the well-lit, expertly curated galleries. I especially liked the abundant 19th- and 20th-century European and North American paintings. Whistler, Picasso, Morisot, Degas, O'Keefe, Hopper and Rodin are just a few of the artists represented.

As I browsed later through the small but lovely gift shop with items such as stunning jewelry, an employee told me to be sure I visited the bathroom before I left. For a split second, I thought she knew we had a long drive ahead of us. Instead, she wanted to ensure that I saw what two artists had done with the restrooms to represent functional art.

Smith College Museum of Art only charges admission for adults ($5) and seniors ($4). It is free on the second Friday of the month. There is metered parking on streets, which is free on Sundays. Closed on Mondays and holidays.

In one of the most beautiful days of this summer, we visited Northampton and walked to the Smith College Museum. I had read about the different tendencies throughout the years to increase its art collection, from local art, to French artists, to American artists from other regions. But I was surprised by the efforts to expand its artistic perspectives not only in the United States, but Africa, Asia and Latin America. There is still room for more diversity, but it felt the intention is definitely present. One of my favorite section was a temporary exhibit on contemporary photography "Dislocation / Negotiating Identity", which depicts thought-provoking images from some regions of Asia. I also enjoyed the current work at the Video and New Media Gallery: Factum Tremblay By Candice Breitz. From the permanent collection, there are wonderful pieces, but one of our favorite was by Kappes, Tattered and Torn.

The college has a most impressive collection, offering visual delights for all. We loved being introduced artists who painted at the time of other famous artists. The museum has a lovely impressionist collection as well as modern pieces in the lower level. But, do go to the bathroom on the lower level (perhaps this exists in all the bathrooms?). Each toilet and sink is decorated in the loveliest blue painting. What a riot! We sneaked in all the other stalls to see if they all had painted potties! The gift shop offers many high end items.

AMAZING. We had seen the upper floors before, so this time we went to the lower level to see the post-1950 art. Two Moterwells, a Frankenthaler, a de Kooning, a Morandi, a Fairfield Porter, George McNeil, two Christos, Yang Yongliang, and that doesn't count the ones I didn't write down... or the bathrooms. (Yes, really, urinals and toilets are beautiful). GO NOW.
