Very impressed ! What a wonderful exhibit, brings you back in time with all the wonderful statues ! Perfect size exhibit on the grounds of Norwich Free Academy with beautiful architecture. Nice little gift shop . Personnel who we talked with were very nice and when we told them this was our first visit without hesitation they shared some of the history behind this gem and personally showed us how to get to the exhibit. We timed it right and lunch hour for the students was just ending. They were all outside enjoying the beautiful Fall day.

Who knew right in the middle of a school one of Connecticut’s most underrated museums. The Slater is located within Norwich Free Academy but my is easy to find and safe for all. The security guard at the front of the school will direct you. Inside you will find plasters of many of the Greek gods created by the museum founders and curators themselves. They have other displays such as a story about the USS confederacy, which was a large ship used during the revolution. There are also some paintings and stories about artist in the area . The plaster statues take the cake and our eye-opener’s . The docents we’re friendly and welcoming, informative as well. The gift shop has many options, including some cool books . Be sure to check this place out.

Recently reopened, this museum on the grounds of Norwich Free Academy is worth the visit simply for the cast statues on display. Couple that with several small galleries of paintings, sketches, and woodworking, and you have the makings of a very nice experience.

Great small museum full of wonderful antiquities, paintings, statues of greatness and an aplithara of past time captures that will make your visit well worth while and enjoyed. I enjoyed it as i went here to the Academy in the 80's and brings back great memories and new ones as well. Great stop in historic Norwich. Also gander all the city's great Victorian architecture on Broadway ave.

This museum was spectacular. We were mesmerized by the Cast Gallery. Very affordable admission cost. Beautiful building. Young man working the desk was great. Need to go back. Did not allow ourselves enough to time.

We were traveling through the area and wanted to find somewhere to visit for a couple hours until it stopped raining. We had seen a brochure on the Slater Museum and thought it'd be worth a look. We both loved this museum. The brochure focused on the plaster casts (which were incredible) but we found there were many, many other interesting things. If you are anywhere near Norwich and enjoy museums, this is a must-see!

My husband and I visited the Slater Memorial Museum on the campus of Norwich Free Academy in Norwich, Connecticut on Saturday, July 27th, 2019. The museum has a wide variety of different types of artwork, being very impressive for a high school museum. An added bonus of this museum was that it is free on Saturdays in July and August, which is a very good value. However, regular admission is reasonably priced. There was also free parking convenient to the museum at the time of our visit. The museum is located in a historical building with very unique architecture. The only drawback of the museum was that there was no air-conditioning, only fans, and it was very warm in the museum during our visit on a hot summer day. Our visit to the museum took a little over an hour based on the amount of time available to us. However, it would probably take at least two hours to really absorb and appreciate all that was on display.

We started our visit watching the video, which provided great background information on the museum and its history. We then went through each gallery. All the galleries were quite educational and provided a good lesson in history, culture and industry, both local to the area and abroad. All the artifacts in the museum were nicely preserved.

The Plaster Cast Collection in the Grand Hall was quite extensive and impressive. The casts are commissioned copies made from molds taken directly from the original statues using a process no longer allowed, which makes them quite unique. The collection includes casts of Ancient Egyptian, Archaic, Greek, Roman and Renaissance sculptures and is part of a souvenir collection assembled in the age of Grand Tours.

The ‘Grand Tour Experience’ exhibit had a wide collection of different objects and paintings on display collected during William Slater’s Grand Tour on his yacht Eleanor with his family. This was an interesting exhibit with good write-ups documenting and providing nice details about the objects on display and various aspects of the places that he visited during the tour. It also provided specific details about Grand Tours, including their purpose, the places typically visited and the types of souvenirs collected as part of these tours.

The Asian Art as well as the ‘Art of the African Mask’, which was quite extensive, were interesting and unique exhibits. The landscape paintings, portraiture of the 19th century, regional-made furnishings and fine and decorative art collections document and tell the story of Norwich. The collections included family heirlooms and objects related to Norwich home life and made our visit feel like a nice walk back through time. The exhibits related to John Denison Crocker, depicting him as a Renaissance Man, mechanist and inventor of industrial and commercial products were a nice tribute to his accomplishments

The Maritime Norwich exhibits, including the displays related to whaling, Norwich invention related to harpoons and other areas of ingenuity and industry in Norwich as well as the USS Confederacy from 1778 provided good background on this part of Norwich’s history.

The National Opened Juried Art Exhibition contained some very impressive pieces of artwork and were definitely worth seeing.

This museum has a lot to offer, much more than what is mentioned here. We enjoyed our visit to this museum and hope that you have the opportunity to visit this museum and enjoy it as well.

Can’t believe we just found out about this museum. The building itself is gorgeous to begin with. The admission was $3! You read that right, $3. The statue gallery is mind blowing. Huge replicas of famous works all located in one place. Can’t say enough about this place. Go see for yourself!
