We took this hiway “74 south” back from Palm Springs heading towards Escondido, it is a very very winding road, but what a spectacular road it is, the mountain views are incredible, you can stop and look down upon beautiful areas, just to stop and to inhale all the beauty that lays before you is breathtaking, a must see, we decided not to stop at visitors center but that was my fault , cheers

The visitor center had great information and friendly staff. We picked up a brochure that guides you through the informative posts along the Randall Henderson trail (which is a great trail with beautiful views).

Hwy 74 is the scenic "palms to pines" route. By the way, it also runs past a couple of sites of the Astro Society of the Desert's star parties. Great stargazing!

It was recommended to take a trip to Idyllwild, so glad we decided to make the trip. The drive through the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains will be remembered for a long time.

The Visitor Center, public restrooms, and parking lot are currently closed due to COVID-19. However, the two trails are open and there are racks with trail guides and other information outside the Visitor Center. Parking is available along CA 74, on the west side of the highway across from the Visitor Center; there is a short trail (but no crosswalk) from there to the Visitor Center.

The short (0.2 mile) Ed Hastey Garden Trail is paved and encircles the Visitor Center building. Many common desert plants line the trail and they have informative labels. The longer Randall Henderson Trail is a fairly easy loop that begins/ends at the other end of the parking lot. The trail can be hiked as a 1, 1.75, or 2.5 mile loop. If you do the entire 2.5 loop (like we did), there is a 425-ft total elevation gain. The 18 numbered posts on the trail are not labeled, so be sure to pick up the trail guide or download it from the San Bernardino National Forest website. These trails might not be very exciting for hard-core hikers, but we enjoyed both of them and thought they provided a pleasant desert hiking experience.

We drove up and back to Idyllwild and part of the fund was looking at the San Jacinto Mountains and then coming back on a winding road to the middle of Palm Desert. Really worth doing .

The Santa Rosa and San Jacinto National Monument,California, is a beautiful mountain range full of green pinyon, redwood and pinyon trees.Lots of wild life,a great modern mountain road, stops on the way for food and gas.Start at the visitors center in Palm Desert and take about a one hour scenic drive to the mountain resort town of Idylwild and return or continue on the loop to Banning and the I-10 freeway-head east to return to Palm Desert.
Along the way is Lake Hemet and Hurkey Creek Lake for a nice stop over.Needless to say theres plenty of photo ops along the way!

The BEST thing we (inadvertently) did when planning this trip was to start here. We took the walk around Ed Hastey Park with a guide and then a couple of days later also took the Anderson trail with a guide. With out this we would have left Palm Springs thinking everything was dried up and dead, but instead we learned how the natural plants are so well adapted and cool. and how much of the rest of Palm Springs is faked up by landscapers. I really admire the volunteers and the people who saw the value in creating this national monument. (If we had started in Sunny lands for example, we wold have gotten the whole trip backwards!)

We didn't have much time but couldn't pass up a national Monument. We checked out a nice visitor center. We walked the paved, short nature trail outside the visitor center. It had some great views and the plants were labeled. There are many trails of different lengths and difficulty ratings. Some trail heads are across the road from the visitor center. Looks popular, lots of cars.

We love to hike in this area on easy - moderate trails. Up Hwy 74 was new to us so we were eager to try it out. First thing, we checked into the visitor centre and we were so glad we did. Besides being a lovely building/exhibit area, a knowledgeable person described the trail we thought to take. It was much too hard and long for us but the suggested three concentric loop trails were perfect and afforded a spectacular view of the valley and the mountains. All this just ten minutes drive from El Paseo!
