WOW! My wife and I had no idea what we were getting ourselves into!! What an absolutely beautiful hike/climb! Very steep and tricky at times but as we were clambering our way up there were several moments of inspiration for us to keep going as we look to our left and see a maybe 3 year old girl doing the same climb with her dad!! At that point we knew there was no stopping, and so glad we didn’t because the view is well worth it!!

Signs at the trailhead advise this is a very difficult hike. They are correct!
Trail starts with a moderate ascent, then you hike up multiple series of stairs and rocky steps with railings.
The railings are very useful, as some of the rocks are worn and slippery.
There's a plateau about halfway up where you can assess if you have enough gas left in your tank to ascend the summit.
This reminded me of Angels Landing in terms of steepness and using railings instead of chains to ensure you don't slip. Though the edges of the trail don't drop off as precipitously as Angels Landing.
A few tips:
Wear hiking boots with ankle support and good protection.
Use the railings to ensure you don't lose your balance.
The descent is pretty hard on your knees / ankles. It helps to use your arms on the railing to reduce the strain on your lower body.
Don't exhaust yourself going to the summit. You need to have some strength and concentration left for the steep descent.
If you're in good cardiovascular shape and have decent leg strength, you can do this hike. It feels great when you get to the summit!

A can’t miss hike to the top. It’s a grind but worth it. My fit daughter and her old dad made the trek. We are experienced hikers having conquered hikes like Angels Landing but this one was tough in a different way. Straight up and constant bouldering. Caught it on a nice 55 degree morning. Tip: get to the parking lot by 8, we arrived a 7:45 and easily got into auxiliary lot for Echo Canyon. We finished the hike 1hr 42min after a nice break to take on the views of Scottsdale/ Phx. Amazing morning. *know what you are getting into, have proper shoes (ideally hiking boats or trail shoes w/grip), & plenty of water. Get after it and do a pace that works for you.

This was a beautiful hike, even for non hikers like ourselves. The scenery and view was amazing and would recommend.

Great mountain to climb. Plan on taking a few rest breaks along the way. This is a hard hike-no doubt about it- but certainly fulfilling. We got a workout, enjoyed the views, and would do it again. Bring water.

Just did this hike up Camelback Mountain with a colleague. It was one of the rare days where the sky was cloudy. Pretty humid though so no typical Phoenix conditions. During the week there was ample parking space for our morning hike. Lots of people already on the trail. Takes around an hour either way if you are reasonably fit. Not suitable for people who are not used to using their hands from time to time. It's pretty much an ascent rather than a hike. Water is really important. The view from the top is awesome. You should definitely do it when in the Valley of the sun.

Excellent trailhead facilities with restrooms, water, and parking. Summer has plenty of parking but busy season is almost impossible. It took about 45 minutes to reach the summit and about 35 to decend back down. It can be challenging so do not recommend if this is one of your first times hiking trails. Bring water bottles.

We had a blast but went unprepared. This is a 1.5 hour hike at a steep incline. Most reviews say slight grade lied. This trail was fun but will kick your butt if not an avid hiker.

My wife and I decided to do this hike as we were up early and the family decided to skip on the hike. We had planned to leave around 7 AM so that we can beat the rush. The hotel recommended taking a taxi to the hike as the parking lot fills up quickly. However, when we got there around 7:30ish, the parking lot was still half empty, so I guess we could have driven.
note, there are restrooms in the parking area if you need to go before or after the hike.
There are a lot of articles written about the hike itself and you can find videos online as well to see how difficult it is. The hike does require you to have proper hiking shoes. Or at least you should have proper hiking shoes to avoid hurting yourself or getting blisters on your feet.
The hike is pretty much steep incline the whole way. so from the beginning you are walking up a steep incline. The rest of the hike is mostly watching your step to hike up rocks. As long as you are careful in where you step (with proper foot attire), you shouldn't get any twisted ankles. Note, you might get a few scratches on your arms/legs as you scrape the rocks.
There are also areas where at times it's confusing where the trail continues. There are plenty of signs but you may have to look around a bit to confirm the trail path.
We also noticed a lot of locals going on the trail. Most of the locals though were on there way down as we were on our way up. You know they are experts b/c they are pretty much hopping over the rocks running through the trail. it's pretty impressive but I wouldn't try to copy them.
Once you reach the top, which takes about hour and half, do enjoy the view a bit. Be sure to have at least 1 L of water per person (if not more) and take a snack or two so you can enjoy your break up top.
Lastly, the hike down is more difficult than the hike up. It's a bit trickier finding the right footing back down, sometimes requiring you to go slower.
round trip it took the two of us about 2.5 hours, mostly b/c we went a bit slower.
Def a great hike and I would recommend if you have kids over age of 10.

Hey,
Looking to hike this in mid-December. Is it possible to climb in the evening/night even after sunset? is that worth it?
Thanks!

How can you hike Echo up and Cholla down...? Wouldn't you then have a problem getting back to your car..?

People have done it. I didn't , but yes, you have to walk back to your car. Other people have used Uber to drop off then have pick up the other side. Hope this helps!

What time does the trail open

Sunrise. Is the best time to get there earlier the better do not attempt in the dark it gets extremely difficult the first half mile not bad but when you start up the part with the railing use both hands. Bring mucho water and rest when needed
Is there a path for taking strollers?
