My wife and I came across this extraordinary tour option located within the modern Groote Schuur hospital complex in Cape Town.
Tells the story of Dr Christian Barnard who in 1967 became the first doctor to successful transplant a heart, taken from a young woman killed in a motor accident, into a middle aged nan suffering heart failure.
The original operating theatres are preserved and set up as they would have been at the time.
4 tours a day which last up to two hours and which are led by extremely knowledgeable guides who really bring things to life and are immensely courteous and helpful.
Quite extraordinary and highly recommended and thought provoking.

This is a stunning tribute to medical history and a great celebration of the man himself, Christian Barnard. Well worth a visit.

I was fascinated that I stood at the same place that the first heart transplant took place! Our “tour guide” was very knowledgeable and lovely. I highly recommend a visit to this museum if you are in Cape Town, South Africa 🇿🇦

Wonderful experience and our guide was so friendly and knowledgeable. It was hard to book, so we turned up and entered through the hospital. It was worth persevering to get here. Very interesting.

Very informative museum with live interactive guided tours. A slice of history. The whole live guided tour is well structured and very well done. The history given, with all the background is well worth the visit. South Africans can be very proud of the achievements of the heart pioneers of the ‘60. Exhibits are real life in the actual operating theatres.

Don't miss this!! This museum and tour are SO WELL DONE!. You have to send an email to make a reservation, but they are very responsive. We easily reserved our place before arriving in South Africa. We found this tour fascinating. The information is fascinating, with many displays using life-size models, the original equipment and even the set up of the original operating rooms. This museum educates, touches the heart and inspires. You do not have to be in the medical field to understand what's being presented. It's well communicated for all to enjoy.

The visit to this jewel of South African history was delightful. The work done by the team to preserve the historic events of the world's first heart transplant is just incredible. The tour guides provide a holistic overview which makes for a very interesting tour. Not to be missed!

My wife is a retired surgical assistant and going to this museum was all her idea. I didn't think I would find it very interesting.
Wow, I was so wrong.
Cindi, our guide, did a fabulous job leading the tour. The story of the world's first human heart transplant is poignant; especially when we learned the tragic story about the donor.
It was fascinating and gave that sense of "I am here where it actually happened" as we stood in the surgical theater where the operation took place, seeing the faithful recreation of the event.
If you have an interest in medicine or history, this is a must-see attraction in Cape Town.

Even the Uber drivers have a hard time finding the correct building for this tour in Groote Schur Hospital, so allow plenty of time for asking staff the directions. It is actually held in the original operating rooms where the first heart transplant occurred. We had an excellent guide Len, who had worked there for many years. You have to book as there is a limit of about 15 people in each group. You don't have to pay until you get there. We were given preliminary information regarding the surgeon Dr Christian Barnard and the donor and recipient. We watched a short video then were shown into the operating room which is staffed by wax figures and is very lifelike. Some of the equipment and instruments are the ones used during the surgery. The tour takes 2 hours and then you are free to wander around looking at the photos and memorabilia around this historic event. Excellent value for money.

How can racism be mentioned in this review, there is no mention of racism at all during the tour or in any of the exhibits.

My review does not mention racism. I assume a reviewer has pointed out that Barnard was prevented from doing the first heart transplant for 4 months because the first 2 available hearts were 'black' and he was not allowed to put them in a 'white' donor in those days. Thank God those days are gone.

Is there car parking here? Is there a free pass for a heart transplant survivor of 17 years?

others have answered your parking question before me. As to whether you would get a free pass the best thing is to ask when you phone up to book the tour. Don't just turn up, see the tour leaflet in any hotel or tourist office in Capetown for details.
