We heard a lot about this place but after the visit were greatly disappointed. Once inside there are about 6 elephants whom one can feed after buying their food. Other than this there is no other activity. There are no guides to tell about this place and explain the activities around.

A fantastic day from the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage!
Dear visitor,
Thank you very much for visiting PEO and writing your humble response on our Trip Advisor page. As you said, we have designed “fruit feeding events,” “jumbo bathing events, “and “walk with elephant events” as additional events, and visitors have to pay additional money for each event when they are interested in participating. As well, most elephants in our custody are not tamed, and we have not used them for most activities like riding, painting, elephant polo, etc.
We have erected many information boards to gather knowledge about Asian elephants and our institute. As well, there is an education center to explain our great task at PEO. We welcome you back to the PEO to get these experiences, and we wish you a good day.
Thank you.
From,
PEO Team.

It is a good number of elephants of every size and age but the foot of every elephant has been heavily chained which makes the sight somewhat pathetic.

Dear visitor,
A fantastic day from Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage!
We thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We are disappointed to read your comment since you are not well aware of our elephant management system at PEO. Firstly, we would like to explain the point you have mentioned in your review of us. Chaining is an important part of managing elephants in Asian countries and it is the simplest and safest tool to confine these large and potentially dangerous animals to a specific area. Because they are more difficult to control in a captive environment, it is essential to usage of chains to control them to some extent. Especially in a captive environment where elephants and humans share, the same space we should concern about elephants’ safety and visitor’s safety too. In this facility, there are certain aggressive and boisterous bull elephants and we are compelled to chain them up for the above reasons. But, we assure you that all the females in the facility are not chained up all the time of the day and they can roam around morning to late evening in the premises.
Secondly, it is need to be aware of the other reasons for chaining up some of the bull elephants in the facility. Hence your photo shows one of our tuskers who is experiencing its musth at the premises. As a dedicated institute for elephant conservation, we are concerned with elephants’ physiological phenomena at the premises, and managing musth elephants in the facility is one of our great challenges. Usually about once every year adult bull elephants go through a change in their behavior known as musths. Musts are caused by increased levels of the male hormone, testosterone. Bulls in musth are much more aggressive than usual and other bulls usually keep away from them. During this period it is essential to be chained up for a few days for their safety and it is true that when sometimes meet two bull elephants in this state, they fight violently and such fights result in severe injury or even death. It severely undermined the purpose of conserving elephants in the facility. During this period we facilitated them with all the requirements in large sheds with confined mobility and our goal is their comfort.
However, we are constantly respectful of your constructive feedback and we are happily informed that PEO has already taken many steps to minimize the usage of chains for male aggressive elephants and muths elephants in the facility. Please visit us again and be aware of the novel condition of the Orphanage.
Thank you.

Dear visitor,
A fantastic day from the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage!
We are so fascinated by your satisfying visit, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your perfect rating. Indeed, elephant bathing at the riverside is stunning scenery with the elephants and its lush surroundings. Elephants in our care are taken to the river twice a day for their daily water requirement, and visitors can observe their natural behaviors, such as bathing, grazing, and interacting with each other while fulfilling their daily water requirement. As well, it is happy to hear that you gathered wonderful experiences by participating in bathing, feeding, and other events at the PEO, and we are happy to hear that you got those lifetime memories with the elephants. The park is run by an government related organisation. It is in a good condition. Signs and information boards explain everything. There is also a chance to feed little elephants. The idea of this institution is good, although not everything might be done in the best way. Maybe some elephants suffer from too less space, but on the other hand, some of the elephants wouldn't have a chance to survive in the wild.

A fantastic day from Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage (PEO)!
Thank you very much for visiting PEO and sharing your humble experience with us. As well, we are so grateful for admiring our efforts to take care of this magnificent species. As you said, we are a government institution under the Department of National Zoological Gardens in Sri Lanka. We consider the carrying capacity of the land, and the total land area of the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is 29 acres, and 65 elephants are currently sheltered at the facility. However, we hope to expand this land by acquiring adjoining new lands in the future, and our effort is to save this species from their future existence in a proper way.
As well, it is happy to hear that you gathered the experience of the feeding event, and undeniably, it will be an unforgettable experience for you. We look forward to seeing you at the PEO again soon.
Thank you.

Dear Visitor,
A fantastic day from Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage (PEO)!
Thank you very much for visiting PEO and sharing your experience with us. But it is sad to learn of your review, as you are not satisfied with your visit with us. We are compelled to chain up some elephants in the facility in some unavoidable circumstances, especially the uncontrolled bulls with violent behaviors, elephants under veterinary treatment, elephants in their musth period, etc. The calm and peaceful elephants roam in free-roaming areas and have their daily baths freely during the daytime.
Chaining is important for safely restraining an elephant during husbandry. Many forms of restraint, if done properly and with appropriate tools, are not harmful to the animal; for example, halters on horses, leashes, and neck collars to lead and manage them in a safe human manner. Aggressive individuals can be dangerous to other elephants and humans and need to be controlled to a certain extent. Therefore, we are compelled to use chains to minimize the harmful effects.
The welfare of the elephants is our top priority in this facility, and we have designed many enrichment facilities in the free-roaming area to stimulate their mental and physical health. We don’t mistreat or abuse them and we daily bear the huge cost of maintaining these precious species we assure you that we are working to protect these magnificent creatures from future extinction.
So, we hope you will understand our operations and we look forward to visiting the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage next time.
Thank you,

So uncomfortable watching these beautiful creatures perform for the public and to make money for the handlers.
What was probably once a genuine elephant orphanage is now another example of exploitation. The elephants don’t look or behave as if they are happy.

Dear visitor,
A fantastic day from Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage!
Thank you very much for taking the time to write to us. It is distressing to learn of your review, as you do not have good thoughts about us. First, we will consider your response about our staff, and we will hopefully make the necessary changes. It should also be noted that we don’t exploit your money and bear a huge cost to meet all the requirements of the elephants, and our optimum target is their conservation.
This government institution started in 1975 to provide care and shelter to orphan elephants abandoned in the wild for many reasons. Since then, we have been conserving these Asian elephants in this facility. We are following international standards for elephant management as much as possible, especially those requirements for space requirements, enclosure design, nutrition, reproduction, enrichment, and veterinary care, to give the elephants a quality living environment in the facility.
We hope you will understand our operation for the welfare of the elephants, and we warmly welcome you back to the PEO in the future for a happy visit.
Thank you.

Please dont go there and support all this animal cruelty... elephants in chains in the river to "entertain" all the tourists, beaten with sticks so they move into the river. You clearly could see that the elephants were very stressed and were not behaving natural at all. We dont want to know how they were "trained" so the guides didnt need to punish them even more so they went into water. I'd love to donate so the guides would really take care of all these beautiful creatures, but now that i know i would not spend one cent to support this cruel circus. We hope so much that they change their standards and treatment to the better for
the elephants as much as possible. Overall a very sad experience.

A fantastic day from the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage!
Dear visitor,
We thank you for your feedback. It is distressing to learn of your review, as you are not concerned with our great task of conserving these magnificent species at PEO.
Actually, we do care about the elephants’ utmost comfort in this facility, and we don’t mistreat or abuse them. As well, most elephants in our custody are not tamed, and we have not trained them for most activities like riding, painting, elephant polo, etc. Unless we do this great task, most of the animals in our care today will not be alive.
When clearing your points, elephants in our care are taken to the river twice a day for their daily water requirements, to build up their physical fitness, and to develop their social behaviors as social animals. Due to their large size and warm habitat, they have a high water requirement, and they typically need to drink around 150 liters (40 gallons) of water every day. As well, they use water to cool themselves down by spraying it on their bodies with their trunks. Furthermore, exercise helps develop good health conditions to avoid obesity. In addition, exercises are also an important form of enrichment for captive elephants. All of our daily routine events focus on the betterment of their lives, and they are not to entertain the visitors. We assure you that all the females in the facility are not chained up all the time of the day, and they can roam around the premises and bathing area from morning until late evening. A few boisterous male elephants are on chains for the safety of themselves and visitors too.
We hope you will understand the operation at our institute. Thank you very much for your feedback, and we look forward to the pleasure of welcoming you back to the PEO.

A fantastic day from Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage (PEO)!
Dear visitor,
Thank you very much for visiting PEO and sharing your experience with us. It is sorry to learn of your review, as you haven’t good thoughts with us. We have spent 49 years conserving these magnificent species, and we do our best to ensure their mental and physical well-being. As well, we do follow international standards for animal welfare, Such as the principles of population control, veterinary care, food supplementation, and habitat enhancement, to keep them as happy as possible in the facility, and we are constantly exposed to new technology-related animal husbandry. Our space is enough to house these elephants, and we concern ourselves with their carrying capacity.
We have designed a daily routine, and each event focuses on enrichment. They roam the free-roaming area and riverside most of the day, and they wade in mud, play, and interact with one another as social animals by performing their natural behaviors.
As well, managing these large creators in this facility is not an easy task. Our mahouts are doing a very hard job, and they do their best to look after these elephants. They use Ankush to manage elephant to control elephants to some extent, as they are always responsible for ensuring the safety of staff, visitors, the public, properties, and elephants. They are doing their best to care for the elephants in the facility and not harm them.
I hope you will understand the operations to conserve this endangered species at PEO, and we welcome you back to PEO in the future.
Thank you. From:

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a good experience, clean and hygienic. You get to feed the elephants, get to touch them and even bathe them and play with the majestic animal. Asian Female elephants do not have tusks and the males do have tusks but they are removed for safety reasons. All in all, you can visit it. There are time slots for the activities of the elephants please go through them and then choose the time to visit.

Dear visitor,
A fantastic day from Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage.
Thank you for visiting Pinnawla Elephant Orphanage and sharing your humble experience with us. First, we are so grateful for your comment regarding our sanitary facilities on the premises, as we always try to keep visitors in a calm and attractive environment. We have also designed a fruit feeding event and a jumbo bathing event to get close to elephants and enhance the interrelationship between elephants and humans.
when describing elephant's tusks, generally only 5%–8% of male Asian elephants have tusks, and females don’t have tusks. But both African female and male elephants have tusks. finally, You are right that we have a daily routine and all activities are scheduled.
Thank you again, and we welcome you again to the PEO for another happy visit.

Please do not go to this cruel place it really is so awful
Go here instead where the elephants are free and not chained kaudulla national park
PLEASE DO NOT GO and support this VILE establishment
IT CONDONES ANIMAL CRUELTY
CHAINED ELEPHANTS with LACK OF FOOD & WATER (until they are paraded round to a lake for 1hour of the day then taken back to extreme living conditions) so very sad
Most Male elephants have all 4 LEGS CHAINED for tourists to take better photographs.
Sending elephants CRAZY, disoriented and disturbed. Very DISTURBING & HEARTBREAKING to see
Elephants are constantly STABBED, POKED & PUSHED by SHARP digger instruments to facilitate tourist pictures
Elephant mothers UNABLE to PRODUCE sufficient MILK to feed babies because of such disgusting living conditions
Stuck in BLAZING heat from lack of shade from sun. MELTING holy with no access to water .
The workers make LOTS of MONEY . LYING when say they are poor. Animal CRUELTY to get rich
Elephants should spend all day grazing freely on grass with access to water. Not chained with limited space/ food on concrete or sandy grounds for tourists to take pictures.
It is such a cruel place and I feel sick to the stomach when I think of the poor elephants living in such terrible living conditions
I cannot believe I paid money to go.
Where to start.
It is like the worst imaginable elephant circus enabling stupid tourists to crowd round taking pictures of elephants and asking workers for close-up selfies - encouraging the workers to parade elephants round for better pictures. Using the sharpest 'poker' & 'hooks' in the elephants' bellys & ears to force them to move for the picture.
And even worse - all the male elephants are chained to one place all day. Some have 3 and 4 legs chained and are rocking back /forth making noises out of pure frustrationz
I could cry thinking about it all. It ruined my love for Sri Lanka.
4 of us went hoping to find elephants that had been 'rescued'. Quite the opposite.
The elephants have been poached to live in terrible living conditions for the sake of greed.
I have been contacting WWF to see what can be done about this cruel elephant 'orphanages' - they should be called 'elephant prison'.
Heartbreaking and I hope dearly to promote more awareness to stop people naively or ignorantly going to such an evil place ...I

You dont necessarily need a guide in the orphanage. Its basically in a zoo layout where elephants are grazing and feeding at a distance from the general public. There are boards everywhere and its very easy to navigate around. Do not miss the milk feeding of the baby elephants..its somewhere around 1-2pm everyday!!
Have a great trip!! Cheers
