We went to see the Urami falls, but the entrance was prohibited. We don't know why, the signs were all japanese. Which is not that funny after a walk of 2km up hill. I don't know if it is a long term think. If you think about going there, perhaps it's beter to ask a local person if it is accessible.

These falls were gorgeous, but best accessed by car. Very narrow road to get to a free lot. Some stairs and unguard-railed trail for .5 kilometers is the best way to describe the distance. Not very slippery, though the wooden decks at the end can be a little. Very peaceful walk under the forest canopy, except for the group of Japanese retirees that joined us and then lapped us on the trail(we had one slow person). There's nobody selling stuff to you at this trail, it's like the opposite set-up compared to Kegon Falls.

Had expected a mini fall since it’s so near to the center - but it’s really breathtaking in crisp fresh morning.

We hiked to this waterfall, its 40 mins of foot from the Uraminotaki Iriguchi bus stop. We actually walked all the way from the bus/train station, following the 'Kanman' path of tourist spots, went to the falls, headed back towards the temples, climbed up behind them and went to the Shiraito Falls on the 'Takino'o' path before heading back into town. (We did end up walking 30 kms that day!)
But the falls were so worth it- the viewing platform is right up close and they are really pretty. You can still see the old path that used to go up behind them.

This is a a beautiful waterfall, well off the beaten track, that is definitely worth a visit if you have your own transport. It is located 2.5 km up a clearly signposted road, midway between Nikko and the more famous Kegon Falls.
The falls themselves are not that large but I found the setting really special: they're in a fairly narrow canyon with maybe 3 or 4 smaller waterfalls clustered around them and I left with a slightly 'lost world' type feeling. It's a 5-10 minute walk to the falls from the car park, with one significant climb.
I was there on a weekend in early September and didn't see a single other person whilst I was there.
If you have your own car, I would highly recommend stopping in, as it's almost certainly you'll be driving up the main road near here if you are in the Nikko Area. If you're using public transport, unless you're in the area for an extended time, there are probably better choices, given the 2.5km walk from the bus stop is not especially scenic.
To contrast with Kegon Falls, these are smaller and less spectacular but don't have any of the crowds.

If you are in Nikko and love nature, then do yourself a favour and visit Urami Waterfall. It is off the beaten track and for some reason, not mentioned in the tourist brochures so little known and little visited but worth seeking out. We drove there and it was about 10-15 minutes from central Nikko. The turn off form the main road has a sign in English. There is a car park with toilet facilities (no vending machines) and then you need to walk uphill for about 10 minutes to arrive at the waterfalls but the walk to the falls is an equal part of the appeal of this attraction. You hug the side the of the cliffside in may places and can see the water rushing below as you pass through dense lush foliage. You will pass moss covered rocks, a small buddha statue and after a number of turns, you will arrive at a moss covered wooden walkway which opens up into the gorge where the 2 large waterfalls are. It is stunning here! A place you will want to linger. Lots of smaller trickling water sources coming down the sides of the mountains too. We went in August and it was quite wet and slippery so make sure you wear hiking or waking shoes with a good grip. I cant imagine it would be too much fun in winter as it would be too cold.
This attraction is free and there are hardly any people- we saw a total of 3 people when we were there and they were all Japanese. Make sure you walk to the base point of the waterfall near the car park as this is also pretty. Yes, Kegon waterfall is famous and the most visited but Urami is more magical. But choose Kegon over Urami if you have difficulty walking uphill in hiking conditions.
I do not know how to get there via public transport but imagine the Tourist info centre will be able to give you detailed instructions.

Free entrance, not many visitors. Beautiful, quite place. You need a car to get to the parking, from there it will be not very long walk to the waterfall.

I'm serious, better than Kegon. It's free, uncrowded, and almost unknown. You'll need to taxi if you don't have a car. This place was so stunning it brought me to tears. Had it to myself for about 15 minutes.
