This happens to be one of my favourite places to visit in the city.
I generally go there for writing exercises when I have a writer's block and want to be inspired. Last year, I visited this place with an artist friend of mine and we spent the day writing and sketching throughout the museum.
If you are going to visit with kids, make sure that they are in an age group where they are curious and can understand what is shown to them.

Our family visit to Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum in Pune was an unforgettable experience! From the moment we entered, we were enthralled by the vast array of captivating artifacts and artwork. Our 8-year-old daughter was wide-eyed with wonder, exploring the rich cultural heritage of India. The museum's thoughtful organization made it engaging for all ages. An immersive history lesson that threw light on how Indians of the subcontinent lived, loved, cooked, celebrated, decorated, clothed, housed, attacked, defended, travelled, prayed and performed. A history buff could easily spend 3 hours at the venue. More prominent direction signboards leading to the venue and dedicated parking space could help as would item
signboards with slightly more information. Also the museum shoppee could have more items reflective of Pune's rich culture and heritage.

If you're on a visit to Pune, this is one of the best places for history buffs. Although this was a private collection of Raja Dinkar Kelkar, it was donated to government to make it into Museum.
You will find amazing works of art in storage, doors & war weapons used in ancient times in India, especially in the western parts of India (Maharashtra, Gujrarat & Kerala).
Each product made at that time, was filled with so much art that you wonder what are we doing now in the "plastic" world. We have lost so much of knowledge about making durable homes, utensils, clothes, musical instruments etc.

From the outside, it appears to be a small museum but once inside there are multiple floors (Lift is also available). There are good artefacts at display and arrangement of these is as per international museums. The big deterrent is the parking which is not available adjacent to the museum and second is they accept only cash as the entry fees (Rs.80/-).

The area doesn't look huge. It's located in a narrow lane where parking is an issue. But forget all that. Once you step inside you'll discover a whole world of amazing idols, historic objects, ancient paintings, musical instruments and much much more. It closes at 5.30 pm and the ticket is Rs.60 for adults. We reached around 4.00 pm and had one hour time with us. We thought we'll easily see it all, but by 5.00 pm we realised we had to rush through the last 3 sections and needed 30 more minutes to fully see and appreciate the amazing collection by Raja Dinkar Kelkar. A must visit!

This an excellent small museum where one could submerge in Indian everyday culture. Despite the location, the museum is housed in the interesting old mansion of its founder. A treasure of statues, mostly religious, impressively sculptured wooden or ivory doors and gates, an amazing selection of Indian musical instruments just to mentioned a few. The museum was an utmost delight to visit and I highly recommend it.

How much is the footfall of this museum ?

The footfall is not as much as it should be... But not crowed either. This is one mans' personal collection...so it's not like a fancy AC museum... but more like a walk through someones house.

Has the Kelkar museum moved to a new location or is it still at Natu baug?
