A Different Perspective but the Unmarked Trail May Annoy You!
3,0 dari 5 lingkaranJun 2020
I've always wanted to do this walk, so set out this morning to give it a go. I started from the Fort next to the Funicalare parking area; counter clockwise. Just as many have said, there are NO signs or markers to tell you where to go, or if you are even on the right path. It can be quite confusing because there are many paved paths and roads and intersect with the main trail along this part of the route. Once I got going, it was an enjoyable walk thru primarily forested/scrub terrain with lovely views thru the trees. Once around to the East side, the highway and train noise is an irritant to an otherwise peaceful walk. There are a few steep sections but they are not lengthy. My arthritic knees managed it just fine with sturdy walking shoes and Naproxen! The problem I encountered was once I rounded the west side and came up onto the street. I could not find the path entrance again and of course there were no signs. I ended up following the road up to the Roman Gate and into the city itself. I was disappointed I did not finish the walk on the path but perhaps next time. If you decide to do this walk, wear good walking shoes for rocky, steep parts of the path. Bring water, and ensure you have plenty of time. I would not recommend this walk for young children or small pets. My two under 20 lb dogs were able to do it, but my 6 lb puppy needed to be carried during parts of it. There are plenty of views from within the town itself, so this walk is more for exercise and a different perspective. I wish the city of Orvieto would invest in better signage or spray markers to ensure walkers stay on the path and enjoy their time.

This was a great way to get out with the family and take an easy couple of hours talking and walking under the incredible cliffs of Orvieto. Unfortunately the Necroplis that were heavily featured on the maps weren't open and didn't look like they had been in a while.

Our group did not have the time to walk the entire loop of the rock, but I couldn't resist getting out to do at least some of it.
We walked a bit along the southern region of the loop and enjoyed gorgeous views of the Umbrian countryside. There were few other people out on the trail while we were there, so it offerred a feeling of quiet immersion in the Italian countryside. I would highly recommend.

We split this "hike" over 2 days, as we spent 2 hrs on each segment. Some of the trail sections are very steep, but the views are dramatic and the scenery of the surrounding valley are gorgeous. There are some informational signposts along the way that explain the history of some of the waypoints.

I walked the corso twice in two days - clockwise, then anticlockwise. Allow just over two hours of moderately strenuous walking and just laugh when you lose your way. Sign posts appear to have been torn down. It's worth stopping to catch your breath at the boards detailing the various attractions along the way. The views of countryside are very satisfying.

Great way to burn some calories! The anello is a trail around the whole town of Orvieto. Great views. The hike can be steep in some parts. You can choose to do the whole loop or just half. One way of starting is by taking the elevator from the old medieval side of Orvieto, which will take you to a parking lot, follow the signs (or white and red marks) to find the entrance. If you are tired you can stop by half way by exiting near the Pozzo San Patrizio/Funicular area.

This walk circumnavigates the old town of Orvieto and would take a few hours to do the entire thing. We expected a walk offering wonderful views up to the town and interspersed with historic sites on the way. The reality was a little less exciting and a lot more effort than expected.
We entered via the Porta Vivaria which was less a gate and more of a car park. There was a big sign board advertising the loop walk but it was not a very formal start for Anello Della Rupe. The first part of the walk was a timbered ramp and being in the shade was quite slippery. The trail started off wide and a good mix of asphalt and gravel. To our right we had decent views down the valley and to our left the towering tufa cliffs of Orvieto. We had glimpses of some of the old stone buildings high above us.
The first site was a former Etruscan Necropolis which was a partially excavated site laid out with tombs. Alas we could not get down to it. We continued on a bit further to find the Chapel in the Rock which was a small intimate chapel dug directly into the hillside. Here we turned around and headed off in our preferred direction. We had occasional views looking up but the ambience was lost because of the proximity of the road. Although the trail was easy to follow we found the up and down tiring. We had to cross the road near the mushroom grotto which was now just a storage cave.
After a solid hour of trudging we finally found the next gate being Porta Soliana. We agreed there was no point continuing the loop as we had slogged it out and we were tired and it had not offered the highlights that we expected.
Overall a decent walk if you have the time but there are better ways to enjoy your time in Orvieto. The effort to reward ratio was a little lacking.

Best to start at the daily parking lot; 2nd option is by funicular. Mostly paved. Has signs that have red/white rectangle, but it needs to be better marked - the city maps can help you (glossy map with black lines for Rupe is best). There are paths that break off from it, but if you go the wrong way, you'll realize pretty fast if the quality of the path changes. Sometimes there are gates that from a distance look closed, but when you get close are open and have the red/white Rupe sign. You get a great view of the Etruscan cemetary/ruins and surrounding landscapes.

Take this walk on a nice day, but some parts are a bit difficult and it's hard to tell which way to go at times (stay close to the wall). My husband found a walking stick which was very helpful The views are lovely. We only saw three people doing that walk on the day we went.

This walk takes you around the outside of Orvieto. You can see some sites and some nature on a clear nice day.
