The views were amazing and the water was calm. Enjoyed drink service to our beach loungers and lunch was exceptional! Kayaks were a fun experience. Met a lot of friendly people and had a great day with family!

Take the ferry or kayak. Have lunch at the restaurant to the far left, enjoy a cocktail and soak in the beauty. Absolutely one of our favorite experiences in St. Martin.

The five minute water shuttle (I wouldn’t call it a ferry) was refreshing as the ocean splashed against the sides, and the views were lovely, but once we arrived, we soon realized this experience wasn’t for us. Although we reserved two chairs and an umbrella on the Karibundi side (a reasonable $25), along with lunch at the restaurant, we ended up canceling soon after arriving and decided to go back to the main land (they were kind enough not to charge us for the chairs and umbrella considering we stayed less than 15 minutes).
We had been spoiled at La Playa on Orient Bay beach the previous four days with comfortable padded lounge chairs, so these unpadded lounge chairs were not as comfortable. Being on the Karibundi side, which didn’t have a breeze, it got very hot for the short time we were there, so Yellow Beach may be more refreshing. Plus, the view toward St. Martin isn’t particularly appealing because you’re looking at the developed areas, whereas the view from Orient Bay beach has your back to the developments with gorgeous views of the bay and islands. In addition, the sand was much coarser than on the mainland and, although the water was much calmer, it tended to attract families with children, so it wasn’t as peaceful.
But the final nail in the coffin was the bathroom facilities: because there’s no running water and plumbing on the island, the bathroom experience was very unappealing, to put it mildly. So if you’re someone who needs to use the bathroom frequently, be prepared!
All in all, it was a disappointing experience, albeit brief, and clearly not for us, but glad to know that many others seem to enjoy it!

I’m glad we checked out Pinel Island.
It reminded me of a cruise ship island but on a smaller scale. The ferry was quick and pretty easy. We did have to stand in the sun for 30 minutes waiting for a return ferry at 3:00 PM. Some sort of sun shelter would make it a lot more user friendly. It was very hot.
The 2 restaurants seemed good. We ate at Yellow Beach. The food and service were fine. Make a reservation ahead of time.
The water seemed calmer on the Yellow Beach side but neither beach was very tough.
It’s a scenic spot with lots to look at.
We won’t go again but it was a pleasant day.

Pinel Islet is a delightful escape just five minutes' boat ride from the shore near Mont Vernon in St. Martin. There are two beach clubs there - we landed at the Yellow Beach club and had a delightful time with attentive service from the beach boys taking care of us, for both of our visits. There's lovely water and excellent drinks to enjoy, a beautiful view, and very good food as well! If you want to take a little hike to the back end of the island you can find the 'secret beach' that is there with clothing-optional swimming.

Pinel island is overrated. The only nice thing there are two beach bars, other than that there is nothing to do. The beach is dirty, there is a small part for swimming but the rest of the shore is full of seaweed. Forget about snorkeling here. I would not recommend visiting

Nothing but an expensive beach with expensive food and drinks. The beach is minimally useful
for swimming if you are not a small child. Lots of seaweed and sea grass close into shore, so unless you just want to spend $12 a person just to ferry out there for over-priced food and small watered down drinks go to one of the other lovely beaches on this gorgeous little island.

Absolutely gorgeous and worth the trip. We rented kayaks from Caribbean Paddling to get to the island - about 20 min there and 15 min back. We were able to see some sea turtles on the way and stopped at Little Key and a sandbar - both worth the stops!
We rented chairs and had lunch and drinks from Yellow Beach - food, drinks, service was amazing. It was crowded, but we expected that. We ventured over to the North side of the island which was pristine and untouched. The water was choppy and rough, but the snorkeling was much better.
Our favorite part of our trip, so far!

A beautiful island to explore!!
We kayaked over. It was about a 20 minute trip for fit adults. We experienced some strong winds and currents. Nothing crazy!Make a reservation. We saw people turned away! CaribbeanPaddling.com
We hiked to the other side of the island. It was a short hike but there are some rocky areas. I was glad to have strap on shoes.
Beautiful desolate beach!
There is a little more hiking you can do… but our drinks were waiting! 😉
We reserved beach chairs through Karibuni.
Great spot! Drink service to the chairs.
We made a reservation at Karibuni for lunch. It was delicious!! I picked my lobster out of the trap!
And then back to the chairs!
There are TONS of hermit crabs on the island. Find a speedy guy and have a race!!
(My guy won!)
There’s a little shop with nice items. Not tacky souvenirs!
We stayed all day! 😎

how long and challenging is the kayak ride if we opt for that mode to Pinel? THX

Sorry for the delay... While we were there on the north side a young family two kayaks, Two adults, two teens, pulled up to the beach. It was a struggle for them and I was worried they would be capsized as the surf was somewhat high. They managed it and did not capsize so all was well. Not sure I would have done that though.... If you kayak to the south side clothed and walk over to the nude side it is very easy and very calm usually....

Yes, if you hike over to the other side of the island, no clothes required
Can you still reserve chairs like you could pre-Irma?

How difficult is it to get a taxi to return back to the cruise port? We were going to do this as an excursion then figured it would be cheaper to go out on our own.

Very hard to get a taxi back unless you pre-strange it with the driver. Renting a car was reasonably priced and a simple drive. It’s a very small island.

There is a dock on the shore across from Pinel. It’s $12/person round trip. There are also kayaks available to rent if you want to do that.

Is there a ferry from st Bart's to Pinel Island? If so, where do I find it and how much does it cost?

Jack K is spot on... I'm not aware of any direct ferry from St. Barths to Pinel Island. Alas... because I thought Pinel Island was pretty cool... I wish I was back there now!

We will be in SXM next week and would like to do this island as a day trip. Questions: can we do snorkeling from the shore here? The restaurant on the island, is it good for lunch? Are there enough beach chairs and umbrellas? Where do we keep the valuables such as a wallet and cameras while we are in the water?

Not sure on the snorkeling, but plenty of beach chairs and you can basically sit in the sand and surf. Food is good, nice place for lunch. We had a view of our items at all times as well, it was very safe there. Only way to the island was with a water taxi or if you kayaked yourself there. Not alot of people there at one time. Super nice place to spend an afternoon!

No booking required. Get a taxi as you depart the ship, have them take you to Cul de Sac to catch the ferry to Pinel Island, pay the ferry fee (I believe it's 10 euro round-trip) and ensure you have a return taxi lined up to take you back to the ship. The ferry to and from Pinel leaves every 30 minutes or so.
