What an amazing project; a must see if you are in the park. I had my doubts before the trip, but most people said to see it. They were correct. I would never have thought of building this garden. Two hundred plus natural rock statutes over four years. What solitude, patience and dedication it took. He shared it with everyone (for no fee) even before the area became a National Park. I would have liked to see it when he was still alive and caring for the flowers. Spectacular nonetheless. A beautiful piece of history in the middle of nowhere.

We paid for a private pontoon tour to the gardens. It was awesome! The sculptures have weathered over the years but the site is unique. A lot of work went into it.

In many ways due the nature and physical geography of the park, Voyageurs NP lacks site specific attractions. However, oddly, perhaps the best site attraction in the park is a truly unique, man-made destination. While assembled to save the nature of the north wood's and lake's environment, the park was really a number of landholdings that were purchase from private owners, including developed home sites. One of those properties was the summer home of Jack Ellsworth, a carpenter from Chicago.
Mr. Ellsworth had a lake house at the base of a rock hill. On this hill, Mr. Ellsworth practiced a hobby of building rock sculptures for 20 years. Over that time, he created a significant number of rock sculptures along this monolith rock hill. Around the sculptures and along the rock, he created terraced gardens of lilies and 28 different species of flowering plants. In the 1960's, his health deteriorated, and he was no longer able to get to the lake house. About the time the park was established in the 1970's, the NPS bought the property with the gardens in disarray. Despite their condition, people continued to visit the property and the NPS was pressured to do some work to preserve the sculptures and gardens.
I visited on an overcast day after a day of rain. It was fun to see the gardens and walked up the rock to see all the different sculptures. However, when wet, you will need good shoes. I slipped coming down and took a little spill. Despite the footing issue, I greatly enjoyed this visit. It was fun to see and so different than anything else in the NPS system. You will need to arrange for a boat ride to get there or secure a space at Recreation.gov for a trip with the park service.

I wasn’t sufficiently observant to notice symbolisms in the Ellsworth’ stone arts. Our Pontoon boat owner, VNP navigator and tour guide shared his observations that made sense.
Table stone or rock sculptures have three legs. To him, it represents the Holy Trinity.
Lilies and other flowers no longer abound but its history makes it worthwhile to visit and learn about. Mr. Ellsworth built the garden and sculpted natural materials for a total of 14,500 hours in 15 years!!!

I so wanted to like this place but it seemed neglected. Maybe it looks better in a different season. Nothing was in bloom and bugs were biting. Attached pictures of the brochure versus what we saw.

The self guided tour was fun to read and search for the sculptures made by Jack Ellsworth. Amazed that he used primaries tools to construct. This was part of Larry’s Voyageurs Tours and Taxi spots to stop at. Larry shared many great facts of the lake and the rock gardens. The kids (8 & 12) had fun looking around too. It was unfortunate that the lack of rain that made the flowers not as healthy as normal years. Recommend checking out if you are able to get there by boat or taxi.

We have made Ellsworth one of our yearly stops during our visit to Lake Kabetogama. My boys (13 and 11) love the chance to climb among the rock sculptures and enjoy the view. The site has recently been updated with a wonderful new dock and we have caught fish here on two visits. We often bring a picnic to enjoy in the shelter as well. The site includes picnic tables, grills and vault toilets. We have been the only ones at the site during at least part of every visit. Bring bug spray.

Ellsworth Rock Gardens is a unique site. Often national parks preserve areas with little human impact. Before the area was Voyageur's NP, Mr. Ellsworth turned a rocky outcropping into a garden of lilies and rock sculptures composed of local granite. Although the site is manmade, it is beautiful and serene. We joined the National Park boat tour and, Ranger Jim, our guide did a phenomenal job teaching us about the park and the gardens. We really appreciate him and Captain John taking us out despite the wind that day! Once docked at the gardens, Jim let us roam with the map and answered questions for us. The National Park has done a great job restoring the gardens, and I can't wait to see what they do with it in the future. The tour leaves from Kabetogama VC and lasts about 1.5 hours. We took all of the tours offered by the National Park and thoroughly enjoyed each of them. I highly recommend doing so and making reservations in advanced on the website recreation.gov. There is a great discount for seniors.

Nice to see it being semi-taken care of. I originally saw it back in 1957 when Ellsworth and wife were still alive and actively working on it. I have nice color pictures of all the lilies in full bloom. Even the teepee at the top of the hill was fully in tact. We talked to both of them in their cabin while they were having lunch. It was a sight to see back then.

Shore lunch is always one of the highlights of walleye fishing in the great north woods. But to enjoy a wonderful walleye lunch amidst the beauty and creativity of the Ellsworth Rock Gardens makes it even more enjoyable. We ate our tasty lunch cooked on two Coleman stoves by our knowledgeable fishing guide, Travis Carlson, in a picnic shelter and then strolled the grounds fashioned as a hobby by Jack Ellsworth from 1944 to 1966. Accessible only by boat, as are many of the sites in Voyageurs National Park, it is well worth the journey to visit this historic spot,
