Mian mountain is a wonder ... easy walking is possible. As is lots of stairs climbing ...
There is too much to see in depth in a day but ... a good sampling can be done in 3-4 hours.
... Going Oct-November means so little crowds - so pleasant ... But get a guide as wandering around without knowing "shortcuts" and best order to see things could be a waste....

We went by public from Pingyao. In total it took us 1,5 hours. By train from Pingyao to Jiexiu (¥ 7-9), which takes 20-30min. When exiting the station, walk to the road and turn left. After 100m there is a small bus station with buses going to Mian Shan. Ours left at 11:00, for ¥2.

The site itself is amazing, although expensive. If your bored from sitting in the bus, there is a nice hike at the beginning. From the first stop, you can walk to the caves, over the dragon rigde. This takes about 2 hours up and down, but gives amazing views.

Highly recommended, and easy side trip from Pingyao. We spent a full day and could have spent more time exploring this beautiful mountain and its many temples! Keep in mind, this is not like a national park in the U.S. - it is much more developed, with a road that winds along the side of the mountain to most of the temples and other sites along the way, and there are buses that ply the road and stop at each of the sites. The temples are beautiful, built into and hanging off the side of the mountain. Highlights were a sort of ravine that had metal steps and ladders along both sides so you can climb up one side and back down the other. A must-do! It looks more daunting than it really is, even though some of the steps seem a bit sketchy - you aren't too high up at any time. Also, once you get to the end of the road, there's an open-air market that's perfect for grabbing some lunch, then you can continue to walk back, past the large hotel, into a stream valley. There are two ways you can go, but again, this is China, so it's a bit developed as "nature" sites go. Still, it's very pleasant and shady, there are small waterfalls along the way and snack vendors here and there. Other reviewers talk about hiking or walking the whole way, but I cannot imagine how you'd be able to see much of the mountain without using the buses or driving between sites at least a bit. There are many trails higher up or on the other side of the mountain that we did not have a chance to explore. We hired a driver from our hotel in Pingyao, and he drove us to the ticketing building and from there we took the buses around the mountain. It occurred to me later that our driver probably could have driven us along the mountain as well, as there were cars on the road in addition to the buses.

We didn’t have a clear idea about where to go so took a punt & went straight to the end to walk up by the river. It was beautiful but in places totally bizarre. Along the way there were animals & mythical creatures carved out of stone in or around the river. At the curtain waterfall there was Chinese dance music blaring out while all the Chinese travellers had their photos taken. Slightly surreal. Most people turned back here but we kept going a fair way further to discover painted dinosaurs & a Jurassic Park fake rock scene. The scenery was beautiful but the dinosaurs were just bizarre. There was a context with storyboards along the way explaining the significance of the scenes along the way but some scenes were well done & others just bad.
We were running out of time so got back to top car park & caught the hop on/off bus to the next stop down. This is where the narrow gorge walk is with the metal steps slotted into the rock. Unfortunately we didn’t have time as we were told it took 1.5 hours.
Got back on bus to next stop down. This part was amazing with temples up in the cave. Well worth going for this alone. You will know you are at the right spot when you see the elevator - don’t be put off. It’s well worth it.
From here you can walk up the scary looking suspended path that zig zags up the cliff. Unfortunately we ran out of time.
My suggestion is have a full day or more here, try to get info about which stops are best & miss the trail at the very end unless you have lots of time.

Whether you like seeing temples or not this is an experience that is worth the trip. The temples are set into the side of the mountain and the views are amazing.
I would suggest going to Qixian Valley as one of the first sites. This is a winding gorge with chains and footings set into the side of the mountain enabling you to climb upwards and in between the gorge.
It is an inexpensive trip to do if you just get you hotel to arrange a taxi or van and wait for you. My only regret is that I did not go early enough to see more!

On This mountain , 2560 meters high , also called the Cotton mountain , a series of 20 different temples are hanging . Buddhist as well as towist going back 1700 years . All this was discovered and made accessible to the public only after 1995 . Also amusement parks and artificial river to walk by .

I went there on a day trip from Pingyao. I arrived around 9.30am and exited at 5pm. I walked all day long ! There is different areas and temples to visit, unfortunately I recommend you to buy a map (5¥) because it's huge. My favorite trail was the Qixian Gu, which is following a stream on a really rocky steep way with difficult steps and rope way. But there are easier walk like the Shuitaogou scenic area. I did a lot in one day but could not do everything. There is an on and off bus (included in the ticket) to go between the areas. I recommend the place if you like to hike, I did not like the 175¥ entrance ticket though because cable card and other fast access are not included. In some areas there is some people trying to sell you pictures but if you hike further you'll end up alone in nature.

I was about to post some pictures I had taken there, but actually none of them shows how spectacular the views over there are. Try to get to the mountain early in the morning and stay till late in the afternoon to make sure you have enough time no only to go from one temple to another by bus, but to walk around and enjoy the panorama.

We arranged a car share from Pingyao, took about an hour to get there. Really nice to get out of the busy cities, although there were still crowds of people visiting. We took the bus up to the top, really nice walk past all the waterfalls to the top (curtain falls) which took a good couple of hours. Then came down stopping at the amazing temples on the cliffs on the way back down. Come prepared to climb stairs!
